AppleTV lost all media
Posted: Nov 5, 2009 4:27 PM

So I come home from work today, turn on my tv and amp to listen to some music while I work. Nothing is playing. I switch over to the AppleTV and browse to My Music, and there are no playlists anymore. I go to my movies, and all my movies are gone. Everything on my AppleTV has disappeared except for my photos oddly enough. I open up my laptop iTunes (which is the machine I sync it with) and stop it from auto syncing the AppleTV and notice the bar at the bottom is empty, except for 4.5gigs of "Other" I had about 100g of movies and the rest full of music and photos. All gone but the photos, and I'm guessing the 4.5gigs of "Other" is actually all my photos.

This is a 140gig model that I bought last summer with no problems at all since I have had it. I am running the latest software on the laptop, the latest itunes, and the latest appletv software. No hacks, nothing out of the ordinary at all. It is connected via wirelessN from my timecapsule and I do stream movies off my desktop also (which is also latest software) Is this a common problem? I saw some posts when I was searching for a solution, but none of them really had a solution except for resync. This wouldn't bother me as I could just sync it and let it go overnight, except all my movies are on an external hard drive, and itunes needs to be repointed to each and every single one before it'll put them back on AppleTV. For over 100 movies, that's kind of a pain.

Questions
Does this happen often and I just never had an issue with it?
Should I do a factory reset before I resync everything? Especially since I've got a couple hours of repointing itunes to my movies ahead of me.
Has anyone else had this problem with either the latest software or some other bugs that may cause this?

This sounds like a problem in itunes caused by the content being removed, relocated or modified, have you done anything that might relate to such an event.

Nope, I've made no changes to my library in weeks. I was also just watching a movie streamed off the desktop last night. I had the music playing this morning while I was getting ready for work and I usually forget to turn it off and it just ends up playing thru the day. When I got home, nothing was going on and I knew something was up.

I've gone ahead and done a factory restore, I figure it can't hurt, but that put me back a few levels in software and I'm resyncing now before I update. Come to think of it, I think I'm gonna erase everything again, update it first before I sync it, hopefully I wont have a problem with that.

I have had this happen to me twice in the last week (since upgrading to Atv 3.0 & Itunes 9.0.2) - exactly as you describe. Both times the screen shown is "choose language" when the screen saver exits. This indicates to me that the Atv, while unattended, has crashed and reset.

On other occasions this week the Atv has stopped responding & presented the Apple TV Recovery screen. Each time I have selected "Reset" and everything restarts with no loss of synced data.
If it happens again I'll choose "run diagnostics".

As you say re-syncing may be time consuming (I'm on wireless 'g' - and it takes days) but painless, but if your itunes media folder is on an external drive then it (the media) needs to be repointed - and that is a pain. (why does Itunes lose track of where the stuff is?)

I've been running fine for 12 months on all previous versions of Atv & iTunes

Argh!!! I had the same thin happen to me. I had lots of movies, TV shows and GBs of Music. Went to look at "My Movies" and nothing was there - same for TV Shows and Music. ALL erased. I had not touched settings on Apple TV since 3.0 upgrade and had watched movies and listened to music after iTunes 9.0.2 upgrade. All media was just... gone. Fired up iTunes on my Mac Mini and now have 6429 items to sync!

This just happened to me tonight! I have over a hundered TV shows and several movies on the AppleTV that were downloaded directly to the ATV (I don't ever sync the ATV to my iTunes library). I watched one last night, I saw them earlier today, but when I went to watch a show tonight all content was gone! Using I tunes I can see that nearly the entire ATV drive is full but the content is "Other". I have done absolutely nothing unusual. But wham, its all unaccessible (I don't think it is gone because the ATV drive is nearly full!)

Help...

I came home tonight and started ripping some CDs into iTunes. My Apple TV appeared in the list of devices and started syncing. This is normal behavior.

After ten minutes, however, it was still syncing. I only added one album to my iTunes library since the night before, so this was unusual. Curious to see what was being synced, I expanded the right-arrow for my Apple TV. Strangely, there were no playlists. Clicking on "Music" revealed no tracks. The "Summary" view said my Apple TV was empty. I had a colorless storage meter. No audio. No video. Nothing.

I went over to the Apple TV itself and flipped through "My Music" to see what was there. Despite what iTunes was telling me, it appeared as though my library was still on the Apple TV. The album artwork, however, wasn't showing. I tried to play a track or two, but playback stuttered badly. I stopped the music. This took several attempts because the Apple TV was sluggish to respond. At this time, album artwork started coming back.

Rebooting the Apple TV was the next thing I tried. As soon as it was up and running, the syncing started again. I'm about 10% done with around 90GB to go.

I updated to Apple TV 3.0 and iTunes 9.0.2 last week. It's been working just fine all this time. The only substantial change I've made recently was to the security settings on my wireless network. After this change, I had to join the Apple TV to my wireless network again. This was a few days ago. I can't see how it would trigger a complete resync.

This is annoying. I hope it doesn't happen again.

I also found my Apple TV completely erased of my content. I'm resyncing everything as I type this. It was working fine last night. Hoping this sync sticks!

Same here all sync'd media content on ATV gone! Running 3.0 for ATV, 9.0.2 iTunes and 1.3.2 for remote. Working just fine up until last night and checking other boards it seems a widely reported issue.

My current set-up has been stable since February this year.

It does seem that 2009 has not been a good year for Apple OS upgrades!

Same thing has happened to me tonight. Only my photos have not disappeared. This is obviously a 3.0 bug. In my case, my 40 GB hard drive has been totally erased and is showing up in general settings and in iTunes as empty (except for a couple of hundred mb for pics). I wonder if it is even worth it to re-sync all my media as this may happen again?

HELP!!! This just happened to me too.

Turned my Apple TV on this morning and ALL the content is gone. I haven't touched a thing since it was all working perfectly last night.

APPLE = this is one horrible bug you seem to have introduced in 3.0

Even assuming everything is still in iTunes, it's going to take AGES to resync everything.

Just looked in iTunes:

It reports my AppleTV as have 124MB (i.e. almost zero) of "Other" and 144GB free. All the content is gone.

Same here, noticed while syncing iPhone that ATV was not in source list - checked out ATV - nothing, now re-syncing the whole dam lot - this better NOT happen again.

Please Apple - look into this.
