PB sleeps while working

I have just come through hurricane Wilma, and ever since, my PB puts itself to sleep, while I am working, even though the battery says it is charged. It does it even more so when I have it plugged in to the AC adapter. I say the hurricane because it was charging in my RV which is running on generator. I am also afraid that in the dark, my son grabbed the charger from his ibook and plugged it in to my PB, will that hurt it?
Thanks,
Garpoe

Not too sure that it is the hurricane. I have a similar problem for a week or so. my PB just puts itself into sleep without any apparent reason with both battery full charged and AC adapter plugged in.
Once it restarts it comes back to life for a short time before going to sleep again.

Mine has also started doing this today. While starting up in verbose mode I did see a reference (before the the message scrolled by) that there was a temperature error.

I ended up taking the whole battery out and I started up my computer while plugged in. It worked fine then. I shut it down and let it sit for awhile, then put the battery back in, and now everyting works fine. I hope it continues.

I tried that too now running with just the PB plugged into the mains. I still get the system going to sleep mode after a while.

Today my PB continued to go to sleep while I was typing. At one point it would not wake up. I took the battery out again and I have been working the rest of the day with it plugged in to the outlet without a battery and it has worked fine ever since.
I hope someone can help us figure this out?

I also posted a msg on the Tiger discussion to see if that brought any more success. I got a response that it may be a result of an over heating chip!
"To find out, after you've recovered from sleep, go to your console log (console is an application in your Applications:Utilities folder) and see if you have a Thermal Runaway Detection which is causing your sleep."
Looking at my log it has showed a few times that the system is sleeping due to being over heated.
So I'm taking it into the apple store over my weekend to see what they can do. Will let you know what they say

James,
thanks for looking into this as well. I looked through my console logs from the last few days, lots of demands for sleeptime, but none that I can find linked to thermal runaway detection. I'll keep an eye on it though. I do think there is some connection with running the DVD player, or itunes continuously that seem to contribute to the problem. Have you had similar experiences?
thanks,
Gary

Gary,
This is an example fo my console logs!.
Nov 8 20:22:36 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Sleep
Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: System Wake
Nov 8 20:46:26 james-thorns-powerbook-g4-17 kernel[0]: Wake event 0800
But yesterday thought that i would reinstall the 10.4.3 update from Mac manually rather than on automatic download, I think that has managed to solve my problem as not getting the overtemp signal in my logs anymore and also doesn't seem to be shutting down as much.
Have you tried updating the system?

Hi
My PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz has this problem too. I've tried to reset PMU for many times. It works for awhile but as time passed the sleeping got so bad that I can't use it anymore. This happen about a week ago. I'm planning to bring it to an Apple retail store this weekend to check it out. Have you guys check it out with an Apple retail store yet?
Btw, are your PowerBook the model with a trackpad that can use two fingers to operate?

Gary,
I think that i managed to sort my problem out. I reinstalled the 10.4.3 update with the combo download from the Mac page.
I had tried the manaual download (not combo) before but think that it didn't install properly. But this time installed the combo update which seemed to go properly.
Then started to use a few applications to use CPU power and to heat the machine and that seems to work. Checked the logs again and no mention of an overheat alarm.
Will test it for a few days to see if it is ok.

I thought that i had solved the problem only for it to return after a few weeks. I don't have access to my PB at the moment but my gf says that it has been doing the same thing that it was doing before. Will check it out when i get home and look at the console logs.
Have you managed to sort your PB out?

I have been experiencing same problem in the last 2 weeks.
Here is last event
Nov 29 19:56:42 gYsd-17 kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Nov 29 19:56:52 gYsd-17 kernel[0]: System Sleep
Nov 29 19:56:52 gYsd-17 kernel[0]: System Wake
Nov 29 19:56:52 gYsd-17 kernel[0]: Wake event 0020
Just checked temp with Temp Monitor Lite widget The highest value detected by a sensor is 118F or 48C at the proc bottomside. Reasonnable isnt'it?
I would like to know if someone has brought his PB to an AppleStore and the result if possible.
Good luck everybody. This is a frustrating thing and I wish we all get sorted out.

For your info, I restarted my PB on an externel FW drive with a clone of my system. That clone was made while on 10.4.2 and not updated. Does the same sleeping problem. So nothing to do with 10.4.3, I guess.
