Mail rejects password, why??
Posted: Nov 21, 2005 8:41 AM

Mail has been working like a charm all year then, about 2 weeks ago occasionally the message pops up " the POP server rejected the password for user xxxxx@XXX.net. Re enter your password or cancel"

I choose cancel, click on "get mail" and it works just fine, I get new mail.
This is an intermittent problem, not 100% of the time.

I use Mail 2.0 and sbcglobal.net, DSL connection.
I have repaired permissions, etc. etc...

What is going on?

What is your time interval setting for automatically checking for new mail?

In addition, check Solving problems with keychains with instructions for running Keychain First Aid.

Thanks, I'll check that when I get home.

As far as intervals, it occurs when I first open Mail and at times when it has been open for a while.
I have Mail to check the server every 15 minutes.

I have this same issue which also started about 2 weeks ago. I am using Mail 2.0.5 with SBC and have my interval set for every 5 minutes. All was well until recently. I called SBC and they were no help - telling me to remove my account and build a new one. I did not.

I also had this problem with SBC, and it started about the same time. If I click "Cancel" in the Enter Password box, and then subsequently choose Mailbox > Go Online (as Apple suggests) it reconnects without asking for a password (as Apple sez it should)!! However, a few minutes later, the Enter Password box returns.

Yucky.

Ditto previous responses. I am on SBC and have been having same problem for 10 days. I have rebuilt my account info, rebooted etc to no avail. SBC is clueless. Any idea? Keychain problem?

I have been getting the same annoying error message also lately. I called SBC and they said it's an Apple software problem. Going to call them tomorrow (too late now evidently) and see if I can't get to the bottom of it.

When I ran the keychain check, I got these in red:
"....this item's port attribute is not set"
"....... has unspecified value for port attribute"
for both my mail programs (imail and entourage).
any idea how to fix this?
thanks!

Set 'Check for new email' to 30 minutes. Problem should disappear.

I just went to sbc.yahoo mail site to get my mail, since mac mail hasn't been working. I then went to my account and picked the tutorial to set up a new account, did that, and now mac mail working!

After the check, did you select Repair and then start to repair the problem?

Another SBC subscriber with this problem.

Apple needs to this problem immediately. SBC is a huge provider and this stupid little problem is effecting huge numbers of people.

I wouldn't place all blame on Apple just yet.

Although this is a checking an account for new mail problem, not long ago SBC decided to block the use of all SMTP servers outside of their netork on Port 25 and conveniently neglected to inform their customers beforehand.

SBC customers were required to "opt out" of Port 25 blocking or use SBC's SMTP server to send mail with any email accounts not provided by SBC.

Point being, SBC made a major change without informing all or most of their customers beforehand so I wouldn't rule out SBC having a problem or contributing to the problem at this point.
