for those using iWeb without .mac

If you don't like the slideshow offered by iWeb when you don't publish to .mac, cheer up because there is a way to replace it.
iWeb dumps a folder called "SlideShow_assets" into your published folder. You can replace that with whatever favorite javascript or flash slideshow package you want, it just needs to get the image urls info and current slide index from the opening photo page.
I kinda like http://www.couloir.org/js_slideshow/ which is open source under the Creative Commons 'Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0' License. I adapted it to work with iWeb. Here's an example:
http://www.codemanic.com/iweb/Europe/La%20fotografia.html
You can use the same if you like, download here:
http://www.codemanic.com/iweb/SlideShow_assets.tar.gz
Whenever you publish with iWeb, replace the SlideShow_assets folder provided by iWeb with this one.
enjoy

This is great! Just what I wanted to know. I figured tweaks like this would happen sooner or later, but not this soon. Thanks for the quick tip! Can't wait to try it out. This slideshow is much slicker than Apple's default.

Very Sweeeeeeeeet! Its so easy I could cry. Perfect for my life as I don't have time to spend hours in front of a computer (2 young kids that I have to attend to)
A much better solution to Apple's default slideshow and for us users that don't need .mac. I host my own website on a FreeBSD server that sits right in my basement.

I had some bugs (image scaling on smaller screens) that I just fixed. You can download again, same place.

Great work, I was just about to come here and report the problem, but you're way ahead of me. Thanks!!

Problems with Slideshow

I like everything about the new iLife package except for the new slideshow for photos on iWeb. Does anyone know if there's a way to get rid of the reflection that appears on each page? I find this to be very distracting. Unless I can figure out an alternative, I'm going to reinstall the previous version of iLife and go back to using homepage.

Can I use this slideshow if I DO publish to .mac? I couldn't find a "SlideShow_assets" folder, but I did find a SlidShow_assets.html file which I replaced, but that didn't work.

I don't think so. I don't have a .mac account so I cannot test (my trial period already expired too ). I looked at other people's .mac slideshows to spy how it works and the slideshow for .mac is slightly different. slideshow.html already has a js context with the images array, it doesn't take them from the opener context. So it's harder to just override the file. The code is a little different but I'm sure it could be modified to work... (unfortunately I don't have time to pursue this, so I'm not volunteering, sorry).

I noticed that when you view the new slideshow in Internet Explorer the forward and back buttons do not appear. Maybe not a big deal to most people here, but I'd like to keep compatibility for my family members that haven't yet made the "switch". Any ideas?

yeah, just tried myself and can reproduce it. http://www.couloir.org/js_slideshow/ has this problem too, so it's not something my modifications caused. i'll investigate when i find some time. one problem is that i don't have a windows machine easily available. you might want to ping the couloir guys too, see if they can fix it.

Scott from Couloir.org, here... I'm not getting any issues on IE6/Win with the next/previous buttons not appearing. You should see a completely different set of arrows (black +/- images) in that browser -- it doesn't support transparent PNGs.
Can you provide more details about your PC setup?
