Tearing and flickering, etc of display in some aapliations even the Finder

Hi,
Received the iMac today and I think the video card has gone bonkers.
The situation is most appearant in FrontRow. When you navigate thru Frontrow the "black" screens get teared severely. Any video watched with FrontRow has almost constant horizontal lines(tears) running thru it. Also the white text gets duplicated and mirrored while it flickers. Watching a DVD thru Frontrow gives the same problem. But when watching with DVDplayer, there is no problem. Also Alt-Tabing thru different applications causes those tears to display again. It's such a same as it renders Frontrow useless.
Are there more people experiencing the same?
A funny thing: System profiler says I have 256MB vram (as it should be), but Apple Hardware Test, says I have only 128! Could perhaps be that AHW is not functioning correctly with the x1600 or there is something wrong with my video ram.
****!

The evidence almost certainly points to a hardware issue. Time to call Apple and have someone take a look at (or replace) your machine.

I have also done a reinstall and wouldn't you know: the 2nd install DVD is not working correctly! It gives an error during installation and asks me to try again. Did try again for a couple of times, but gave up. I managed to install the basic system as that uses only the 1st install disc.
In the end the problem was still the same. So I brought the computer to an Apple Service Center exactly 24 hours after I opened the box for the first time. Major bummer! They told me that they are going to investigate and if they have to replace the logicboard, that I shouldn't be surprised if I have to wait several weeks before those are available.
I don't understand why Apple themselves (I spoke to a support person on the phone and yesterday had an online chat with support) didn't offer to replace the imac rightaway.
I got to taste how snappy and beautifull this machine is, but what a waste as I'm not being able to use it for a while.
Cheers.

I've just noticed a flicker after about a weeks use.
Seems to go away after a restart, but comes back after a while.

Big time flickering on Front Row and other apps here as well. Very disappointing. On hold with support now...

I received my new 20" today and I have the exact same problem.
Anything involving Front Row, or the DVD player itself is nothing but constant tearing and flickering.
I'm very disappointed.

Not sure if this is your problem, but there were some 20" iMac Intels that were supposed to have 256MB vram but ended up with 128MB vram instead (part number MA417LL/A). These were sold in the stores as a combination upgrade with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse and the upgraded vram. It appeared to be a problem with packaging, not anything wrong with the actual hardware itself. Apple has distributed a list of serial numbers of these machines - we bought ours last week and ended up with one of them.
The stores have received a new shipment of this configuration, but currently they are on 'hold' until further notice. Hopefully Apple is just trying to sort out the inventory problem.
You can read all the posting about this at:

There were also a few posts about this on MacNN - google the part number to get URL.

Can somebody who has the 256MB Video RAM version confirm that the AppleHardwareTest says it's only 128MB Video RAM? As I explained above in my original message: "system profiler says I have 256MB vram (as it should be), but Apple Hardware Test, says I have only 128". If other people have AHT displaying 256 MB, it is clearly a hardware problem with the X1600!
If this is the case I can perhaps have Apple send me a replacement iMac so that I don't need to wait ages for my Apple Service Center to receive and built in a new logicboard.

Very bad issue.

Hi,
I spoke with Apple (I bought the iMac thru Apple's online store). They decided that they're going to send me a new iMac and a courier will come and pick up the bad one.
I hope that when the replacment iMac arrives (256MB Vram) it doesn't have this problem anymore.
Cheers and good luck everyone.

I'm having the same problem. Apple won't take it back since it's built to order and told me to take it in for repair. I'm quite unhappy about this.
I also have the hardware test/system profiler discrepancy
Here's my config:
iMac 20" Duo 2.0
500GB HDD
2GB RAM - from factory, not upgraded by me after receiving unit
256MB VRAM
iMac (intel 2.0)
Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi Padriac,
Mine is also built to order. It's not possible otherwise as there is no standard version with 256MB Vram. They should take it back and even more so if it was delivered to you less then 2 weeks ago.
Cheers
