can i also mention, that the system crashes within seconds of booting, so i see no way for a FURTHER software update to rectify this... have apple released a bad software update which is going to mean i have to wipe the whole laptop... if so... im very sad...

Same here. Just after installing the update my MacBook Pro 2GHz hung at “Starting Mac OS X”. Then (I had to hold the power button) it booted to Mac OS X and hung as soon as it mounted the Windows partition. Tried this twice. Now just switched the book off (I worry about my FileVault-protected home volume, don't want to force-shutdown too many times).

Looks like I'm not the only one then.
I'm not using Boot camp either.
I've only had my MacBook Pro for 2 weeks and everything has been going great until now...
Hope there is a fix.

Same thing here.
Not running boot camp either.
Have managed to boot in to safe mode and am now backing up project I was working on to disc.
To enter safe mode,
1. Switch Mac on with power button.
2. Immediately after you hear the startup chime, press the shift key - keep it pressed until the Apple logo appears, then release.
Hopefully Apple will release a fix quickly, and it can be downloaded and applied via the Software Update utility.
I was in middle of important project that needs to be delivered at 7:00am, thanks Apple.

Similar problem here. I installed the latest security update via software update. It rebooted twice and then the Aqua "starting Mac OS X" splash screen appears, the progress bar jumps to 100% very quickly and then the system goes into what looks like sleep mode (the power buttons dim like when it's asleep). It won't wake up after that or restart by holding the power button. Have to unplug it!
At first, I tried a couple times using the OPT key to try and boot from another disk and it ignored it and went to sleep as above. Then, I tried using the SHIFT key to try and boot into safe mode and the screen stayed black and it didn't seem to be doing anything. After that, I tried OPT again and it booted successfully. Now it seems to be booting normally again. Try booting with SHIFT key held down and then reboot normally to see if that works.
This is very, very bad. I am afraid.

Thanks David,
I've been trying various different combinations, each time reverting to a standard boot with no joy.
Only advice I can offer, is if your system will boot, backup your important stuff and limit your usage until this is properly resolved.

I hate to say it, but I don't think there is a problem with today's update. I did both the Security and QuickTime update on 3 machines no problems.
