Front Row says "not authorized" for mp3 songs with no DRM

I just got one of the new MacBooks and it is my first experience with Front Row. I have all my songs stored on an AppleShare server (afpd on a Linux machine). Everything works great with iTunes.
However, when attempting to play the songs with Front Row, it says "This computer is not authorized to play the selected song. Go to iTunes and authorize it." However, these are straight MP3 songs -- not AAC with DRM. Further, if I do go into iTunes and select the song to play, it works fine.
Any idea what the problem is?
Thanks,

I have exactly the same problem. I didn't really notice it before this week (after I upgraded Front Row).
I imported my entire CD collection to an external HDD, but about half won't play in Front Row unless I back out, start them in iTunes, and then go back into Front Row, which seems rather pointless.
I'm not sure what the difference between those tracks/albums that play and those that don't is, given that most were imported using the same Mac Mini I am trying to play them with...

I posted this in another thread, but I'll let you know what I think solved my problem. The external disk I use to hold the music I formatted using the MacMini. My guess is that this uses slightly different drivers since the format is done using an Intel Mac. I then copied the music to the drive from my desktop and reconnect the external drive to the Mini. I redid the music library and viola, FrontRow plays all files without claiming they are DRM'ed.

Although you have solved your problem by moving your files to another hard drive, this is not a general solution.
My music files are on a half terabyte RAID-5 storage server. I don't have enough local disk storage to store them all. So I cannot move my files.
If they play fine in itunes, then they should play fine in Front Row. This is clearly a bug.

I completely agree. It's a major bug that needs to be fixed. I purchased my first Apple, the iMac and love the look/feel. I was going to purchase a miniMac to run my music from my family room. Until I ran into this issue. I have approximately 600 gig of mp3s on a Wintel Box. I was able to network over and play without a problem in iTunes. Then you go into FrontRow and some work, most don't. This needs to be fixed or it would help if Apple acknowledged it and gives us some hope.
On a side note, what is your server storage solution? Was thinking about putting a dedicated server in for my mp3s.

My "solution" worked for a day. Hopefully Apple can get this fixed soon.

Are you all playing the files through the local iTunes (as opposed to streaming from a shared machine)?
Are you all running the latest QuickTime 7.1?

Ovbiously I can't answer for everyone, but in my case:
Are you all playing the files through the local
iTunes (as opposed to streaming from a shared
machine)?
All the files I am trying to play are on an external drive connected by USB to the local machine.
Are you all running the latest QuickTime 7.1?
Yes.

I get the feeling that this is a problem with ID3 tags in the files.
I wanted some album art for all the CDs I had imported, but didn't much feel like manually looking for individual album covers, and adding them in one by one.
I thought I'd give MPFreaker a whirl - it is supposed to go out and fetch album art, lyrics, track info, release year, album name (if you don't have it), etc. It basically re-organises the ID3 tags on the file, and adds what information it can find from the internet.
In any case, I left my Mini running for a couple of days, and sure enough, it had found album covers for most of my imported music. Some of the covers weren't correct, but it is at least album art and looks nicer than no art at all (and is quite interesting sometimes what was imported).
The interesting part for this thread was that since I ran MPFreaker through my collection, I haven't found a single track that would not play in Front Row.
I'll keep checking randomly through my collection to see if it is coincidence.
I ripped my CDs in MP3 format. I don't know if this would work for Apple lossless format.

For what its worth, I have/had this same problem. I launched Disk Utility to try and verify the external USB connected drive that my library lives on, and found that Disk Utility could not verify it since it could not unmount it. That got me thinking that maybe there is a connection. So I manually ejected the drive, then remounted it using Disk Utility. After doing this, I was once again able to play music with Front Row. I am guessing this is entirely about using an external drive, and possibly about using a USB external drive. I am considering a switch to using a firewire enclosure to see if that helps at all.

Okay, by reading the posts, now I have a solution for my issure:
Remember, I use a network drive for my music library. If the drive is not mounted and I start iTunes, the drive will be mounted automatically by iTunes. Then it is not possible to play tracks by Front Row. So, if I mount the drive manually and then using Front Row all tracks are playing fine.
Thats it! I have to mount the music library before using iTunes, respectively Front Row.
But heres my question for the Apple Engineers: What ist the different between an automatic mount of external drives and a manual mount? Why apps like Fronw Row have different behaviors?
