not where your concerned paul no - but we don't see eye to eye.
As Nick said he did the usual bootcamp XP install and then upgraded to VB2. I've just done the install and again no sound as of yet but runs a charm

Hi Paul.
Fan of your site. Anyhow, I had Boot Camp with XP installed. I got ahold of Vista and I tried to upgrade XP to Vista. It did it's thing, but upon reboot install would simply fail. I don't recall the exact error it gave. So then I tried to boot the Vista DVD, which it did, but it would stall when trying to setup the preinstall environment.
So I fired up XP again and ran Partition Manager 7 and saw 4 partitions: One 188MB and one 118MB. The other two partitions were OS X (70GB) and Windows (22.8GB). I wondered if these other two partitions were causing Vista to not want to install correctly. I clicked on both of the foreign partitions - the 118MB had no options availabe, but the 188MB did, so I hit delete.
Rebooted and was able to boot the Vista DVD successfully. It ran the Vista installer and I had it write over XP. Now everything works as before and when I reboot it goes into OS X, but if I hold down "option" I can chose OS X or Windows, but now Windows is Vista Beta 2 5384.4!
Some may ask, "What are the consequences of deleting that partition?" As far as I can tell, nothing EXCEPT (you knew it was coming), if you try to run the boot camp utility is OS X it simply says I need to upgrade my software for it to run. Which doesn't matter, I already have my two partitions.
Overall I really like Vista. After reading on Tom's Hardware that most games worked okay I tried installing civilization 4, and surprisingly it works. A bit slower than in XP, but it does work. Overall it has been a good experience. OS X still boots in about 15 secs, versus Vista's close to a minute, but it is beta. My only problem is it has 2 weeks and will expire. I hope they release the public beta soon so I can get a valid key as I don't want to have to do this all over again.
BTW, even though I "deleted" the 188MB partition to get vista to install, I just ran parition manager again under Vista and all 4 partitions are still there. So I must have only erased some information that was preventing Vista from installing. I'm not too sure, it's odd.

Nick, can you try running the bootcamp utility one more time?. If if does not work, one would assume that the consequence of what you've done is that you cannot revert to a complete OSX install by using BootCamp to delete the XP/Vista partition and restore the disk. (if someone wanted to do that).

Yea that is the only consequence. However, it's very minor (to me) as one can easily backup their OS X install and run disk utility from the OS X install DVD to reformat/partition their drive. Also, for people who are boot camping anyhow, it's unlikely they'd want to "go back" to one partition unless they're totally abandoning Windows. But it does add another step.
Nevertheless, that is the consequence, whether it is troublesome to you or not is based on the user.

Do your power settings work in Vista (screensaver, stand by, hibernate)?
Under Windows XP my MacBook's screensaver starts and it won't go into stand by after inactivity.

When you are using windows on your macbook can you switch from windows to OSX or do you have to reinstall the software everytime you want to use a different operating system.

Hey Matt,
No, you don't have to reinstall the OS every time.
Apple's Boot Camp utility (link below) basically divides your drive into 2 areas -- one for OS X, the other for Windows. You decide how big you want the areas to be.
Follow the instructions to install Windows, then whenever you reboot your computer, you can choose which OS you want to use.

you don't need to install XP. just make partition by bootcamp, and put windows vista beta 2 DVD. that's all.

Have you done that method? If so, how did it go?
A person at TUAW noted that a fresh install (vs. an XP upgrade) left him with no working wireless.
Switched from MBP to MB.

While I can't wait for the release of VISTA to check it out. I'm eagerly waiting for the next OSX. Should blow VISTA away with some "new" and "exciting" implementations.
VISTA does look nice...but it's only skin deep. I think Microsoft is trying to have everyone "upgrade" by buying new machines "just" to run VISTA. I'm sure you can get by with a P4HT computer without any problem. Might not get to do all those "visual" things that VISTA does...but to me, it's nothing new because OSX is already doing most of those "visual" enhancements anyway.
But...it would be nice to run VISTA on my MacBook and see the reaction of my friends who says that my MAC is useless because I can't use any of their "PC" programs. And the fact that the MacBook mostly meets the VISTA requirements...should run it without any problem.
I'm not going to buy a new PC or PC Laptop just to run VISTA...and if the next release of OSX will allow us to run VISTA, there's definately no reason to buy a new PC or PC laptop.
Just some thoughts...might not agree with everyone of you guys...but I think MACs are so much better built than "any" PC/laptops out there...software and hardware. Looking forward to see what they have in waiting next.
