Keep Discussions Moderated and Supported
Posted: Jul 31, 2006 2:06 PM

To whom it may concern:

If the recent information regarding Apple dismantling the forum staff is true, I would strongly urge Apple to reverse this decision. The Support forums are an invaluable resource and one of the features of the Apple experience that truly separates them from the pack.

Please, bring back the hosts and continue hosting the forums....

Thanks,

A concerned and unabashed fanboy since 1992....

Hi meela$h,

"If the recent information regarding Apple dismantling the forum staff is true"
Fortunately, it's not entirely true.
There are still threads that get removed, not at once though, but after about two days, showing some degree of moderation still working.
For example, the long thread about the increase in misbehaviour due to lack of moderation, lasted a few days, got edited once and left alive, then got finally removed.
The following thread, complaining about the removal of the first, also lasted about two days before disappearing this morning.
A third about the subject, that I am aware of, has been removed too, and most probably finally this one too, although we could always hope (kind of) that these removals are only for the sake of keeping archived only some "good image stuff" for future generations (rather than a simple censorship à la Big Brother).

"Please, bring back the hosts and continue hosting the forums..."
I so much agree with you!

I hope people at Apple realize that these forums are not too much about "showing what's wrong" and "that support is needed",
rather,
very very often about newbie hand-holding in a very friendly, efficient way that can only add to Apple's good image and reputation.

Fingers crossed!
:-)

I would also like to add my voice to the people who would like to see the Apple forums moderated.

I've been an Apple user since late 2003, and to be honest, the forums provided me with plenty of help that I needed when I was first starting out. They made a *huge* difference to me, as an incoming non-mac user.

Pretty much everyone has been helpful over the years. It would be truly unfortunate to see such a valuable resource for new and long-time users to degrade or disappear altogether.

I strongly agree. These discussion groups are the best thing going at the Apple web site. Many thousands of problems have been discussed and solved over the years and this is the most important place for new users, switchers and old timers alike to get to know one another and work together as a family and team.

Loss of moderation would be terrible, and the possible loss of the discussion groups would be a killing blow to Mac fans and to the Apple reputation. This is the first place I recommend to users who ask me questions even if I have the answer they need. I tell them to search here for all possible opinions and solutions.

Hi

Personally, I find the truth of this rumour difficult to believe. So I won't believe a word of it until I see some confirmation from a reliable source. It doesn't make sense.

Apple will never announce it, and neither will the former moderators.

Those with lounge access are aware that the moderators along with their purple Apple's disappeared. There is sporatic policing going on, especially surrounding this subject, so Appe hasn't completely abandoned the forums, at least not yet.

There is no reason, nor any facts available, to support the conclusion that Apple is going to close the forums. While a reduction in staff is unfortunate, it does not signal the end of the discussion forums. At this point the only certain fact known is that the moderator staffing levels were reduced. Staff reductions are common in American business today. If they can get one or two people to do the work of five then that represents an increase in productivity and nothing more. Obviously, the reduction may not prove to be a good decision but as of this time we don't know what the results of that decision will be. There simply has not been enough time since the change to know whether the decision is a good one or not.

There have always been whiners, trolls, complainers, and folks behaving like children out here. They come and they go. Sometimes there are more of them than others. Like all things in life it is a cycle. Right now, in some forums the whinning and name calling is worse than usual. In other forums it is the same or less. In the six years I have been here I have seen this happen time and time again. This is not new. Moderation is taking place, sometimes more slowly than it used to but sometimes it happens just as quickly as it did in the past. I think all of us simply need to relax, step back, and try not to let the emotion of the situation get the best of us.

I would suggest that we need to emphasize the positive and not dwell on the negative.

Al Van Malsen,

That is the best and most insightful post I have read since following all the latest threads concerning the Forum, Manners and Moderators, etc., thanks for honest and down to earth post!

<imho>This Forum will exist whether there is 1 moderator or 50, it will make no difference to at least 95% of the Apple Forum Users.
