keynote .swf in iweb

OK I know there's a few apps involved and anyone could be a problem, but since I just went to QT 7.1.3 I guess this is my issue.

http://www.gartside.co.uk

This web site made with iweb conatains a .swf made with keynote. since upgrading QT the file no longer plays. I don't know enough to understand where the problem lies.

I realise QT is involved even though I don't understand why QT plays a flash file, perhaps QT calls on flash to play the file because of the way iweb writes the site and this calling doesn't happen anymore in 7.1.3

Either way this is my business site and whilst it can still be used, it doesn't look very good. Anyone know whats going on.

I also wonder if the same problem occurs with our windows friends who have just upgraded QT, but I have no way of knowing.

By default, QuickTime 7.1.3 has Flash support disabled you need to enable it for the QuickTime plugin to be able to play Flash files.

I imagine that Keynote writes the plugin html code in such a way that calls QuickTime rather than Flash directly. You may well be able to update this code so that your .swf movie is played by Flash itself.

To fix it for now, Open QuickTime preferences, choose the 'Advanced' tab and select 'Enable Flash'. You'll then need to restart the browser for the Flash content to start showing up.

This is really bad news as anyone who uses Flash embedded in QuickTime now needs to instruct their users to turn on Flash before the content will work.

Your page works just fine and your tortise and hare .swf file also works.
iWeb only writes page code that uses the QuickTime browser plug-in.
Your Keynote file is exported as Flash version 5 which QuickTime can view. iWeb writes special page code that uses the qtsrc (QuickTime source) tag which "forces" the QT browser plug-in be used.
You would need to edit the javascript file created by iWeb and change many of the tags to use any other .swf file.
If the page isn't working correctly for you you're probably not getting a "fresh" page from your ISP and instead are viewing an older "cached" file.

Well this is brilliant... it does indeed fix playback of flash files, in the Finder, in the Quicktime Player, teh godz, or Steve only knows where else.

My only complaint....

To have Quicktime player (at least) have a more informative message than "There has been an error in this Movie file" and then totally refuse to open it.

Thank you for the excellent pointer to the new feature in the Quicktime Preferences...

And I agree getting "Users" to actually look at preferences is going to be a chore.

Gee guys thanx for the help. I've turned on flash support in QT and voila, I can now see my page in full again.

Whether my customers can is another matter, I suspect I had a few windows people who didn't have QT, but now I've pobably got very few at all who can see it. Maybe it's time for a change.

I know this isn't the right place, but any chance of pointing me in the right direction. I know nothing about html, I can use something other than iweb for my opening page, is it just a case of adding the swf file to a source folder and linking as I would an image or am I way off target.

Solved

I figured I'd find the solution here. Wonder what this is all about? For the longest time, they've been touting Flash support in QuickTime and now not only are they doing a huge turnaround, they're inconveniencing innocent customers. Should make some PC users happy, though, since QuickTime won't be taking over Flash duties anymore!

Though, it's probably because if you're doing anything dynamic with QuickTime, they'd rather you use the QuickTime API's instead of leaning on Flash. Problem with THAT is that now I've got to redo all the email quicktime stamps at the bottom of all my pages....

Strange. I just upgraded to QT 7.1.3. I have not enabled Flash. But I can see your movies. ?? I'm puzzled. For my own files, I can't see the Flash track, that is superimposed over QuickTime. Also, I get no warning. QT does not report a problem. It just shows the QT track. This is catestrophic for me. How can I warn people first of all. Secondly, how can I be sure they will do the extra steps of opening QuickTime prefs and clicking the right buttons/boxes?

The tortoise and hare animation is just H264. I couldn't find where the keynote presentaion is on the site.

Flash tracks are failing in local files too, and until you re-enable Flash and restart QuickTime Player, the Flash track shows as a Base Video track. No clues are given that it should be a Flash track, so it won't occur to most people that it's a Flash related issue.

Thanks for the info about how the Flash track shows up! I had processed an audio file as MP3, exported from Flash, then saved as a QT .mov. The audio file no longer works and I didn't realize that was a Flash disabled problem too.

On the Worldwide Panorama list someone is suggesting that this is a bug that Apple has introduced and I should file a bug report about it. I will file a bug, but I can't see how anyone doing this could possibly not know how it would affect users. I feel it is as intentional as not supporting anything past Flash 5.

It is odd, but it is being discussed on various QuickTIme lists. The QuickTIme team certainly know about the issue (at least that we see it as an issue).

Sorry guys

I couldn't put up with my site not working. So I got to work on fixing things, first tried dumping flash, which is why a couple of you got a movie, just as qtkirk pointed out it was a straight QT movie. Couldn't get that to do what I wanted so I have ended up going for flash only.

Sorry to lead you all astray, and sorry to take so long, I messed up with the counter and couldn't get it in the place I wanted it.

By the way, not sure if I said in this thread or another, but seems flash is disabled in both mac and winows versions, only I was totally unable to enable it on windows and accessing my site gave me a memory access error in IE.
