iPod 60 GB G5 problems with podcasts and Firmware 1.2

Hello,
I have an iPod G5 60GB Video and just installed iTunes 7 and the new Firmware, 1.2. The scanning of all my music (for gapless transition) took a long time but was successful. I updated the firmware on my iPod to 1.2 with no problems and resynced it.
Now, when I play just about any of my podcasts or many of the tracks of music (all MP3 format), the iPod immediately displays the apple logo and resets! I have tried several podcasts that have worked in the past and get the same thing. The Diggnation podcast seems to be the only one I can get to play correctly and some of my MP3s.
Everything worked fine with the previous versions of iTunes and the Firmware. This seems to happen on almost everything, so I can't imagine I am the only one experiencing it. Please help!

I'm having the same problem with my G5 30gb. The iTunes and firmware updates seemed to go perfectly. The music and videos play fine, but the thing resets every time I try to play a podcast. ***?! Why does Apple do this to us? Those commercials on TV claim Apples "never crash." My A_S they don't.
As a side note, my Tunbase FM doesn't work with the updates either. Half the time, my iPOD just freezes when I plug it in.
Can anyone out there help us poor bastards? Please don't ignore us just because we're new.

I have this exact problem as well, podcasts are a huge part of what I listen to. Extremely frustrated! Just tried restoring to factory settings and that failed!

No issues or problems here with any of the iPod or iTunes updates.
What third party hacks do you have installed(if any)?

well, I called support. They gave me a workaround. Deselect your podcasts from the sync list and resync. Then load it back on. This worked for me.

I will try that. I think it may have to do with bit rate. Podcasts encoded to bitrates over 100 seem to work, but podcasts with bitrates lower than 100 cause a reset.

I don't have any hacks. I don't have any third party software of any kind. I listen to podcasts every day, so I'm pretty upset. The podcasts I get from iTunes work OK, but I download radio shows off of websites, and import them into iTunes. This was never a problem until I updated yesterday. I even tried converting the files to AAC, but it didn't help.

Since upgrading to firmware 1.2 and iTunes 7, I have noticed that some podcasts I download from web sites directly are causing my iPod to reset immediately when I start to play them. They will just not play at all. However, if I first play the podcast file for at least 1 second in iTunes, and THEN sync with my iPod, it will play correctly on my iPod. I did not have this problem at all with iTunes 6 and firmwire < 1.2.
I just did a test: I found an MP3 podcast (only 48K bitrate) that consistently caused my iPod to reset when I tried to play it since upgrading to firmware 1.2. I then played that podcast in iTunes 7 for 1 second, stopped the podcast, and resync'ed my iPod. When I played that same podcast file on the iPod, now it plays fine.
I wonder what clues this tells us about the cause of the problem. In any event, this seems to be a workaround until it's resolved. What a pain, though...

I have a original 5g 30GB. I have the same problem, with certain podcasts. After comparing the ones that work vs. those that don't, I think the source of the problem is the encoder used. For example, podcasts encoded with the Lame3.96 don't work, but those with "unknown" work just fine. I don't know of a work-around yet.

I have tried to narrow down encoding, but many of the ones I have that don't work, have itunes 6.x for the encoding. I am still thinking that the bitrate has something to do with it.

I have tried what schenck did, but that didn't work for me. Out of curiosity, does Apple monitor these forums?

Another problem I have also found with Podcasts is that they are marked as default to "Skip when Shuffling" when downloaded using Itunes. I have not found a way to modify this default as of yet. I will post once I do.

I have heard that Apple does not monitor these forums.
I am having the same problem with a U2 iPod that I bought about 6 weeks ago. After upgrading to firmware version 1.2, I am unable to play several podcasts.
I physically deleted the offending podcasts from disk and re-subscribed and re-downloaded - still no help.
The three I am having problems with are the following (so hopefully people can compare):
* Engadget - MPEG audio file - 64 kbps - 44.100 kHz - Encoded with iTunes v6.0.5
- cnet Buzz Out Loud - MPEG audio file - 64 kbps - 44.100 kHz - Encoded with LAME3.92
- The Popular Mechanics Show - MPEG audio file - 70 kbps (VBR) - 44.100 kHz - Encoded with iTunes v6.0.5
A few that DO work are:
* MacBreak Weekly - AAC audio file - 64 kbps - 44.100 kHz - Encoded with iTunes v6.0.4.2, QuickTime 7.0.4
- CBS News Podcast - Eye To Eye - MPEG audio file - 64 kbps - 22.050 kHz - Encoded with Unknown
- NBC News - Meet the Press - MPEG audio file - 32 kbps - 22.050 kHz - Encoded with Unknown
What's the pattern? I have no idea although it seems that the lower-bitrate MP3s seem to work at 22.050 kHz but not at 44.100 kHz. AACs seem to work fine no matter what the stats are. Maybe by converting the non-working MP3 podcasts to AAC they will work?
I will try that and report back...
Follow-up Re-encoding the non-working podcasts to AAC makes them work so it must be something to do with the way they are encoded e.g. low bitrate. Hopefully apple will release 1.2.1? I really don't want to downgrade as I have already purchased Tetris and it is awesome!

well I'm not having that problem... but I applied the update... it shows version 1.2 but I do not see the "search" option under music. =(
I was having trouble too... so I switched computers and did the update... eventually iTunes didn't completely locked up and finished the update.
