Solution!!! (for iTunes not recognizing Nano)

I've written this as a reply to the thread below as well - but as it seems more than just our friend below has this problem I've also posted this as a separate post
----------------------------------------------------------
Hi everybody,
I have - like many of you, suffered through this frustrating process of Windows recognizing the Nano and yet iTunes not recognizing it, and after some research I think I may have found a solution (perhaps not THE solution).
Just so you are aware, I just want to warn you that I'm not some computer science expert or anything, and this is a pretty old article (written May 2006, http://pluralsight.com/blogs/keith/archive/2006/05/26/25476.aspx), BUT I think this works on iTunes 7.0 because it is now detecting my nano. Basically I think what the problem is that the Nano is supposed to be formatted as FAT32 to work with iTunes but for many of us outdated Nano users the Nano is still formatted as FAT.
So like the blog author has written, we need to go and run the Windows disk management tool (if you are not a computer person like I really am not, just go to Windows help and search "disk management" and it'll give you a link that brings you directly there). The disk management tool will probably show the C drive and then the iPod as well as any extraneous hardware. RIGHT CLICK on the iPod (it should be there since all of you are saying that XP recognizes it), format it to FAT32 (it will warn you that info on your ipod may be erased, but this doesn't matter since it's just info on your ipod and your music is on your C drive anyway). I didn't re-run the iPod updater like the blogger did (especially since the iPod updater is apparently included in iTunes 7.0 now and the latest one, which I believe is iPod updater 6-28-06..is now outdated and invalid)...but the next time I ran iTunes, it recognized the iPod!!!!!! HORRAY
So in simple instruction form,
- Open Windows disk management window (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management)
- Once you have this window open, click on Disk Management (under Storage)
- If like you say, your XP recognizes your iPod (but iTunes doesn't), then your iPod should be listed under that window along with your C drive (and maybe others). Under File System, it might say FAT.
- If it does, RIGHT CLICK your iPOD and choose Format
- Change the Format from FAT to FAT32. (It will warn you that everything will be erased but that's ok)
Btw I also restored the nano (to factory settings).
I hope this helps...was glad to find there were other people suffering through the same thing. Misery loves company! Please let me know if it worked for you and if you have questions

I have tried to restore my ipod to factory settings and I am not having any luck. iTunes tells me to get on the iPod tab - how can i do that when iTunes doesnt recognize it??? I then tried from the website, no such luck. Any suggestions?

You're absolutely right, you can't restore the iPod to factory settings until iTunes 7.0 recognizes it (especially now that iPod software is updated through iTunes 7.0).
What you can do for iTunes to recognize your nano is to work through the steps I've explained above. What I'm guessing is the problem is that your nano is currently formatted as FAT and needs to be changed so that it is formatted as FAT32.
How you change this:
- Open Windows disk management window (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management)
- Once you have this window open, click on Disk Management (under Storage)
- If like you say, your XP recognizes your iPod (but iTunes doesn't), then your iPod should be listed under that window along with your C drive (and maybe others). Under File System, it might say FAT.
- If it does, RIGHT CLICK your iPOD and choose Format
- Change the Format from FAT to FAT32. (It will warn you that everything will be erased but that's ok)
This should fix the problem
Let me know how it goes!

Right. I tried this, and then reinstalled iTunes, and when I started it for the first time it saw the Nano. It told me it didnt have enough space to put the music on, so I changed the options for it to sync only the playlist I want, and hit apply... then it said it can't find the right folder, and then that it can't find the hard drive, and then iTunes froze up.
I restarted iTunes and now it won't detect it anymore, and it's still FAT32.... BUH!?

I'm also having the same problem with the New Nano and iTunes 7 my girlfriend's laptop. I'm assuming its a similar issue with the file system, since it works great on my iBook.
Format is FAT32, i've restarted, restored, reset, and done everything my former windows self could remember to no avail. Anyone have any other ideas?

I too am a victim of upgrading to iTunes 7.0 I reformatted my nano per instructions, even though it already was FAT32. I reset the nano as well, still no joy. What's interesting is that if I restart the computer with the nano plugged in, it recognizes it and tells me that I need to update to 1.2. As soon as I do this, however, it says that it's updating, but the ipod goes from 'do not disconnect' to the normal menu. iTunes says it’s updating, but it never does. I need to kill the process through task manager to get it to quit.
Additionally, if I choose not to update, the nano shows up in iTunes just fine and I can move songs to the nano. (I have it set to manually update the nano as I have more songs in my library than the nano can hold.)
However, as soon as I ‘eject’ the nano, reconnecting it does not show the nano, whether I stay in iTunes or close iTunes and then unplug and plug in the nano. The nano shows ‘do not disconnect’, and windows sees the nano, but still no joy in iTunes.
FYI, I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the software and tried all the directions at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Which I was directed to when doing the diagnostics on the iPod through iTunes.
This is a total crock. Some upgrade.

To FX Pooky:
Be patient with iTunes 7.0...that happened to me many times also (I had to force it to quit and then start up again about 3 or 4 times until it worked).
About your problem about not finding the right folder..try re-installing iTunes
Good luck!
To Mike:
This solution was targeted for people whose computers could detect the nano but iTunes could not. Is this your situation also?

zweige:

was last updated in March 2006.
I'm not sure if this will help you or not since I don't really understand your situation, but what I did before I went through all this FAT32 stuff was that I installed the last ipod updater before iTunes 7.0 came out (which has the updater with it...they were separate before).
This ipod updater is called 6-28-06, you can download it at http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2527.200606.pidf/iPodSetup.exe
Once you have this, try installing it and running the Updater, which will install iPod 1.2 on your iPod.
There might be a chance it will not work because it may conflict with iTunes 7.0 and say it is not the latest updater and is therefore invalid. But I think it's worth a try.
Then once the 1.2 is on your ipod, try opening iTunes 7.0 again and see if it will work with your ipod
Let me know how it goes!

More info:
My Nano is 3 months old and worked fine with iTunes 6. I installed iTunes 7 and it wouldnt detect my Nano, so I formatted it to FAT32 and such, at which point iTunes saw it. However when I went to change its settings and hit Apply, it gave me these two error messages while showing the big "Charged" battery icon on the Nano:
The iPod "Eric's iPod" cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found.
The iPod "Eric's iPod" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.
... after this, iTunes freezes. When I restart it it doesn't see the iPod anymore, so I have to force shot down iPodservice and close iTunes, then open iTunes again, to get the exact same symptoms.
Also when I tell iTunes to restore the iPod, it the progress bar never gets farther than 0. I've left it open all night and it was still at 0.
Help!
