How to regress from iTunes 7 to iTunes 6.0.5
1. Make sure you have a copy of the iTunes 6.0.5 installer. If you no longer have one, download it here:
http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty2.pl/product=11622&cat=1&platform=osx&method=sa/iTunesSetup.exe
2. Shut down iTunes 7 if it is running
3. Uninstall iTunes 7 via the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
4. Go to your iTunes MUSIC folder (usually C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes). You will see two files called "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library". These belong to iTunes 7, DELETE them.
NOTE: Take care not to confuse this with the iTunes INSTALLATION folder, which is usually C:\Program Files\iTunes.
5. You will also see a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries". Look inside, there may be several copies depending upon your upgrade history with names like "iTunes Library 2006-09-12". Take the most recent one (the last one used by iTunes 6) and COPY it up to the folder C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. Now RENAME this file back to simply "iTunes Library".
NOTE: To copy a file in Windows, right-click the file and choose "Copy". Now go to the folder you wish to copy to, right-click in the empty folder space and choose "Paste".
NOTE: To rename a file in Windows, select the file and press F2. Now type the name you want and press ENTER.
After this is done, your iTunes MUSIC folder (C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes) should contain the following objects:
a) The file "iTunes Library" that you just copied there and renamed
b) The folder "Previous iTunes Libraries"
c) The folder "iTunes Music"
6. Now reinstall iTunes 6. All your playlists and ratings will appear as if nothing had happened. And, your Shuffle will work once more.

I have done all this to the letter, however, there is no music in my library. My last music library was dated Sept 14, 2006, and I copied it as you stated, with the extension but it did not import. When I tried to import, it said it did not recognize the .itl extension, and did not know which program to use to open it.... what do I do now? (I have an iPod Video 30G,5th gen.)

iTunes will not even open unless it recognizes a good library. If your songs are not in the library, FIRST, make sure you are "logged in", otherwise you will not get access to these songs you bought from iTunes Music Store. SECOND, import the songs by either file or folder. Have you done this?

Actually, iTunes will open if there is no library - it will simple create a new, empty one.
In cases like this, a new empty library is probably a good place to start. Delete the old (bad) library files (not the music files!) and restart iTunes. Now drag the music collection into iTunes to import; all your old playlists and ratings will be gone, but the music will be there.
Once that is done, try playing a song purchased from the iTunes Music Store. It will ask for your account authorization - enter that, you are done.

Unfortunately, I tried that. iTunes6 did open with an empty library, but when I tried to drag and drop, it wouldn't let me. When I tried to import, it wouldn't, so when I tried to open the library to see if there were songs there, it asked what program I wanted to open it with, I specified iTunes, and still nothing. So, I re-installed iTunes7, and all my songs are there, including the ones that have the exclamation points beside them.... so I'm stumped, and still using version 7. I'm hoping that Apple will come up with a fix to V7 and I can get on with it, unless of course, I can figure out how to get my library back in V6...

Hi,
Thanks a lot for the help, and specially for the link to the
"old" (but running) version of iTunes.
It was really a nightmare since the update to 7.0 !
Waiting anyway for a fix to 7.0 (several new features
were quite interesting)
