Nike Sport Kit Sensor Not Recognized by 2nd Gen Nano
Posted: Sep 16, 2006 9:50 PM

I was using my Sport Kit with my old Nano, and it worked fine. I received my 2nd Gen Nano yesterday, and the sensor is not recognized by the new Nano. The new Nano has the latest firmware available for it -- 1.0.1. I notice that this site states that the required firmware is 1.2, but that firmware is apparently only for the 1st Gen Nano. So, what's going on here? How can I get my 2nd Gen Nano to recognize the Sport Kit's sensor?

Have you received any info on this from Nike+ or Apple? I am thinking of gettting the new Nano, but will wait if there are problems with the Nike+ kit.

After messing with the sport kit and the new Nano for quite awhile with no success, I decided to see if the sport kit still worked with the old Nano last night. I plugged it into the 1st Gen Nano, powered up the Nano, and it recognized the sensor. I then immediately removed the sport kit device from the 1st Gen Nano and inserted it into the 2nd Gen Nano. Amazingly, the 2nd Gen Nano detected the sensor. I can't explain it, but it seems to be working now. I'll post again if I experience further problems with this.

Glad that you got it working. But the question as to whether the 2G Nano will work with the sensor remains for those of us who don't have a 1G Nano to kickstart things with.

I don't know that you need to kickstart the Sport Kit with a 1st Gen Nano to get it to work on the 2nd Gen. I was simply out of options with mine, and that's the only thing I could think to do. It just so happened that after plugging it into the 1st Gen, having it find the sensor, and then immediately plugging it into the 2nd Gen, the 2nd Gen finally located the sensor. I don't know that there's a cause and effect relationship with what I did, but as long as it works now, I'm not going to complain.
I do have to say that I like my 2nd Gen better so far, especially the longer battery life. And, so far, it doesn't seem as buggy. For example, the 1st Gen lost volume after plugging the sport kit into it (could it be that the stupid volume control limit had this effect in the 1st Gen, even when that function was supposedly off?), and I haven't noticed that issue with the 2nd Gen.
Good Luck!

2G nano will absolutely work with the Nike+ kit. Just received my new nano today and it is working. I did not have the 1st gen nano so this sensor has not been used previously. Stevie J also specifically stated in his "It's Showtime" keynote that the two would work together.

I'm not doubting The Word of Steve, but just take a look through the rest of this forum - other people are having problems with the 2G and the Nike+ sensor. Think I'll wait just a bit longer.
