Airport does not have an IP address?? No Wireless Mac Support??

I've connected to the Internet via a Linksys router for months. After an update, I could got an error reading:
"Airport is connected to the network (name). Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet."
Linksys R-E-F-U-S-E-D to support Mac and told me to get a Windows PC...uh, okay, sure.
I'm ticked off because I am an online student. Cingular cannot help either because they have PC cards - not Mac.
WHO can help? Where do I go to get wireless Internet service????? Please!! This is urgent!!

Is your router getting a public ip address from your service provider? It could be the network is down (or was).
Go to your router admin (ususally 192.168.1.1 if you havent changed it) login and check click on status. make sure youre getting a public ip from the ISP. If youre not click on renew DHCP lease and see if it picks one up. After you make sure of that then you can start troubleshooting airport.

Hi Anthony,
Linksys tried to troubleshoot it with me briefly. They tried to log into their network to ping an IP address. When that failed, they refused to help any further because I have a Mac.
At this point I am going to try to access the Internet via my cell, but I don't kow if the MacBook Pro has a wi-fi card installed. Do you know?

I believe they do. To double check goto Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations, Make sure it is checked ON while there, and drag it to the top of the list also.

Have you power cycled the router (uplug, count 5, replug)?
Have you reset the router to default?
Does the router have WEP encryption enabled or is it OPEN?
I also have a LinkSys router which worked fine before the update 10.4.8 and then wouldn't connect afterwards (MacBook Pro).
I had to put in the encryption key's HEX values rather than the password phrase, as I had done previously.
As a last resort, find a Starbuck's for wireless until you can get your problem worked out.

So under Wireless Security, I should try WEP 40/128-bit hex instead? I'll try that. Thanks.

No wi-fi in the list, but thanks for your suggestion. At least I know where to look now.

Yes, every MacBook Pro comes with a an Airport (wifi) card built-in. It might not show up in that list if it's not connected to anything.

Try this:
Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > TCP/IP (tab) > Renew DHCP Lease
Try clicking that button a few times to see if an IP address, Subnet Mask and Router IP are assigned to your computer.
Also, are you using any kind of wireless encryption on your router?

Trust me, it's not a wireless-only problem. My ethernet-connected desktop G4 (OS X 10.4.8) lost its connection today after my wife updated the Linksys router's firmware.
It would not renew DHCP no matter how many times I clicked the button. Tried forcing a renewal in Terminal too (sudo ifconfig en0 down;sudo ifconfig en0 up) and even sudo ipconfig set en0 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP), but no dice, still no luck.
Finally went to manual configuration, including typing in the DNS server info and then I finally was connected. Man, what happened?!
Best of luck to us all.

Hi!
Try this one if you're not getting an IP address and should be:
Go into your mac hard drive, open the Library folder, remove the Preferences folder, then pull SystemConfiguration into the trash. (this will not erase your system configuration, it'll just reset your internet and sleep settings).
Then restart your computer. You'll have to create a new network location (or just change something in your network prefs and change it back), then click apply and try to join your network again. Should get an IP then.
Good luck.

I have seen this happen with version 9 as well. Since Windows and Linux machines on the same network can get IP addresses just fine, I don't see how the problem can be blamed on Linksys.

Possibly those OSes are taking care of reality rather than some accepted standard!?
