10.4.8 update and AirPort connecting to WEP-encrypted networks
Posted: Oct 13, 2006 6:19 AM

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.4.8, I have been having trouble with the WEP-encrypted networks in my school. AirPort connects to the network seamlessly at boot-time, but if I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, it will lose connectivity and I have to manually enter the network name and WEP password again. 50% of the time when I do this, it will declare an error, but clicking "try again" it then connects normally. Is there a change in the AirPort WEP-encryption software in the 10.4.8 update that can explain this state of affairs? I'm holding off on updating the student iBooks to 10.4.8 in order to prevent mass chaos in connectivity.

More information on my school's wireless network. There is an access point in each classroom. Each access point is a Cisco 1200 series, with WiFi A/G capabilities. The access points serve several SSIDs (all non-public), some SSIDs are configured for A, the others for B/G computers. I have all the SSIDs configured on my computer. The majority of the incidents have caused loss of ability of my computer to "see" any of the SSIDs, though sometimes I just lose detection of the primary SSID, and one or two secondaries are visible. The loss of connectivity/detection happens whether or not the computer has been moved to another room, so it's not just a problem of acquiring a new access point.

I am having a very similar problem. I updated my iMac (G4) to 10.4.8 on 6 OCT and since then I lose my wireless connection frequently--I haven't isolated it to when the compuer sleeps, it seems to occur even when not asleep. Mine network has been even more disrupted than what you describe. I connect through my extreme card to airport express (my base station). My computer loses the base station and I have to reset it each time and then reload the profile I saved which had my wep password. If I simply try to enter my wep the network returns an error message and cannot connect. I will see this evening if disabling my computer's sleep function prevents this problem. I hope Apple is monitoring this and figures out a patch.

I'm having a similar problem with my MacBook, I have two wireless networks setups, one at home and one at work. I have both routers to not transmit the SSID, I'm able to connect without a problem at work, but since 10.4.8 update can't connect to home network automatically. If I want to connect I have to enter the SSID and encryption key to be able to join. Once joined my connection never quits, unless I put my computer to sleep or shutdown.

This is very weird because it's only affecting my home network, I have the same hardware at both places and have almost the same conditions, the difference being that at home I have 64-bit encryption versus 128-bit at work.

A well know problem, but there is a fix that works for most...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482

Works for WEP, WPA, WPA2 and others.

I tried what the Apple document suggested (which was simply to dump all your encrypted networks and reenter them), but the problem persists.

There appears to be some IntelBook/Airport problem also, that Apple needs to fix... from what I've read.

Do not upgrade your student Mac's at your peril. This is a nasty, persistent problem that Apple needs to fix.
My daughters both have iBooks running 10.4.6 which works AOK, as did mine until I updated to 10.4.8. I now have to reboot after waking from sleep to access our WEP home LAN.
I'm looking into what it takes to go back to 10.4.6 or 7, and it's not easy.

A nasty problem indeed, in my case traced back to a missing (or disappeared) com.apple.keychainaccess.plist file. I finally solved the problem by erasing the HD and reinstalling Mac OS X, including all the updates to (and including) 10.4.8. The reinstall took a while, but now at least the Airport problem is gone.

Well, if the problem can be solved with a clean install of OSX and update to 10.4.8 BEFORE binding AirPort to encrypted wireless networks (possible with pre-downloaded updates), then that should at least make the update possible on the student Macs; they're due for an image refresh anyway. I was worried that clean 10.4.8 installs would wind up with this problem and render the student computers inoperable. If I can fix this problem by reinstalling the OS on my computer, at least I have a roadmap.

<rant>I have an outstanding applecare issue on this. I spent about four hours on the phone to various helpers and nothing seemed to fix this. System preferences were dumped, I backed out to 10.4.7 and nothing fixed it even re-updating to 10.4.8. Something in the 10.4.8 update smashed the airport connectivity and it persisted even after re-installing 10.4.7.

Grrhhhh. The apple munchkins have my boot log which shows the silly airport card not managing to get the wpa password off a chain which has it. They promised to email, but of course they haven't. These are supposed to be Apple people not DELL.

The problem may be that there was some kind of firmware update related to airport security shortly before the 10.4.8 software update which could be the real culprit. Don't know how to undo firmware stuff.</rant>

Hello, I am new to mac osx, just bought a core 2 13" macbook and I can only connect to unprotected networks. Neither wep or wpa works!! I searched all the foruns, tried all the "solutions" and still can't get it to work!!

I thought macs worked! this ***** big time! thay only have one architecture! they only need to develop one driver...how hard can it be! I chose mac osx over linux so I wouldn't have these worries!
I can get a wireless card working on a linux distribution just using iwconfig in under a minute! regardless of wep or wpa...this is frustrating!

There is a question here :)
How does apple support works? isn't there any online support other than these foruns?

Mac osx is based on OpenBSD right? is there any chance to to get iwconfig over here?

Beste regards,
Ivo.

Wow! I am having the exact same problem. I just got my MacBook Pro last night and I can't get it to connect to my DSL Gateway.

I have been having a very similar and very frustrating problem with My Macbooks. I have two 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbooks that have serious issues with WPA and ocasionally WEP encryption on one of my routers. I have a D-Link now and had a Linksys before and both had the same problem. I have another Linksys running DD-WRT that doesn't cause the issue nearly as much.

One of the Macbook's has the upgraded driver for the Airport card inside that gives it N, the other has the standard A/B/G driver. The one with the A/B/G driver also had tremendous problems pulling the DNS info down, I had to manually put the DNS servers into the computer for it to reach the internet.
