Blinking Green and Amber lights fixed with new "iPod Shuffle Reset Utility"

I tried out the new Shuffle reset utility and it worked great.
I have a 1-gig first-generation Shuffle.
It is about a year and a half old, and three months ago I got the flashing green and amber lights. I tried all the ways suggested in these forums and nothing worked.
However, this new utility that Apple developed worked beautifully and my Shuffle is back in action. Kudos to Apple.
To get the utility, click on the Downloads section under the Support tab. There is an “iPod Shuffle Reset Utility” for Mac and one for Windows.
Download the utility. (It didn’t give me a desktop icon, but I found the utility under Programs in a folder labeled just “iPod.”)
Once opened, the utility prompts you to plug in your Shuffle. Then it gives you a big friendly looking “Restore” button.
I clicked on the button and two minutes later, everything was fine. My Shuffle works fine. I hope it works for everyone else as well.
Thanks, Apple.

Cool news! I have downloaded and tried the new "iPod shuffle Reset Utility 1.0 for Mac". I launched it, it asked me to insert my iPod Shuffle 1 GB (first generation, long and white). Then the "Restore" button got activated. Cool, I said, it recognizes my iPod. I pressed "Restore" and I got the following message.
"Reset Failure. There was a problem obtaining information from your iPod."
Now I would like to say to Apple: I noted that the utility has been released just yesterday Oct 25th 2006, probably to solve all the problems mentioned on this forum and reported to the Apple Call Centers. So, "good job Apple". I really appreciated. In a couple of days you created a tool and posted a doc at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303979
explaining the symptoms I got and the cure. Great support.
Anyway on my iPod Shuffle it didn't work. Please, standing by the message I got, does this mean that my iPod died? Should I throw it away? Or still have I some hope? Thank you.
Thanks
Lorenzo

Unfortunately, I can’t really answer your question. I don’t work for Apple and I’m definitely not an expert. All I know is that this new restore utility worked on my Shuffle. I can’t even guess why it didn’t work on yours, or what that error message you got means.
But I wouldn’t throw out your Shuffle or give up hope. Mine had been sitting in a drawer for months. I hadn’t heard anything, but I assumed someone at Apple was working on the problem and might come up with a solution.
If this utility doesn’t work on everyone’s Shuffle, perhaps there will be an updated restore utility in the future.

Unfortunaltely the tool doesn't work for me either. Perhaps my problem is another one. I can hear the music, that is on my iPod, but he will not be recognized.

THANK YOU Apple! This is great news. Now I can more confidently update and use my Shuffle. My first one was replaced because of this green-amber -light phenomenon and I began losing my belief in the device. This proves that Apple really hears what users say and comes with a solution. Ten points to Apple!

Mark3D,
The symptom you are seeing indicates a hardware problem. If you have access to another computer, I would suggest trying to restore the iPod with the iPod shuffle Reset Utility on that computer. If you get the same error, the iPod will probably require service.

Great, my iPod Shuffle works again!
It stopped functioning about three months ago and I went to the Apple store on 5th Av in NYC to see if they could help me. The (nice) guy told me told me that it was 'dead' beyond repair and all I could do was throw it away (guarantee having expired). Great advice Mr. Genius...
Anyways, I found the utility by chance today and within 2 minutes my iPod shuffle was back to life again!

I had the same problem with my Shuffle too. The first time I tried running the new Reset Utility for Mac, it crashed while attempting to do the restoration. On all subsequent attempts, it begins, then shows the error message, "Reset Failure. There was a problem obtaining information from your iPod".
I guess I'm going to have to hold out for version 1.1 of the utility.

Kol. Panic,
This error message is a strong indication that there is a hardware problem. If you have access to another computer, try using the utility to restore the iPod on the other computer. If you're using a dock, hub, or USB cable, take that out of the equation by plugging the iPod directly into the computer. If the restore fails on the second computer, the iPod will probably require service/replacement.

Thanks for the quick reply, Roy. I had plugged the Shuffle directly into a high-speed USB port on my PowerBook, not through a hub, etc. I may try the update on another computer, though.
I've already upgraded to a new Nano, so if it's truly frakked, I'll just stick it in a drawer. Besides, the Shuffle's out of warranty, and I don't want to spend the $$$ to fix it.

Great tool. Great doc. Works almost like a charm.
I am now able to see the Shuffle in iTunes (both Mac and Windows), add songs to it, change its settings to use it in partial disk mode, etc. Quite good so far as none of this was working before (not even recognized). I guess the few of us who sent a log file of the iPod updater to Apple tech support last week made their day.
However, I can't play any music. From the shuffle I mean. Because from iTunes, I can play what's on the shuffle. But once I unmount it and hit any button on it, it blinks Green and Ambre again. If I reconnect it, it mounts fine and can continue to add/remove songs.
It just doesn't play. Any idea?
One detail: iTunes 7.0.1 (7) on Mac does not reconize the version nor the serial number of the Shuffle, but iTunes 7.0.1.8 on Windows does.

Well, found the problem: it's Shuffle world 101...
Just converted the songs I was placing on the Shuffle to MP3 160kb/s and now these play like they should.
It's been more than a year that I couldn't use my Shuffle, so I lost some of my own memory...
Thank you Apple! Finally!
