someone please help me!! this is driving me crazy! i had no problems until about 2 weeks ago. what now happens is ill be on the internet (a wireless connection) and suddenly my internet will drop off and when i go to see the list of available networks nothing shows up..not even the network that i was just on. the only way that i can get the connection back is to restart my computer everytime. i end up restarting my computer on average 4 times a day just to get on the internet. if anyone has any ideas i would really appreciate it. by the way..all of my software is already up to date, because i thought that was originally the problem.

Your software being up to date IS the problem. I have this EXACT same problem. From what I can gather in the discussion groups, it's tied to the 10.4.8 update (which can't be "uninstalled"), but I haven't found a consistently effective solution. I've tried a few things myself but still have the problem. If I find something, I'll let you know.

Yep - same thing.
Giving up on my Airport Express.
Just got back from Circuit City with a couple D-Links and a Belkin - gonna read some reviews and set one up tomorrow morning.
Surfing right now on my neighbors network.
My Airport set-ups worked flawlessly for years until the dreaded firmware update.
I've done EVERY trick listed in these forums (and a few more just for the **** of it) multiple times with no luck.
I'm a robe wearing Apple follower - and have been for many years - but losing faith since they have not addressed this issue.

Add me to the list as well.
I've tried all suggestions...reset modem, reset and reconfigured router, reinstalled combo update, followed the article posted on how to (supposedly) fix the problem. When online, drops randomly. After it activates from screen saver, drops. Wake from sleep, drops.
Now I am experiencing problems with my mail as well. It keeps prompting me for my password even though I check "add to keychain".
Could this possibly be some sort of keychain bug???
Blech.

I had hoped to be posting a successful solution, but I created another problem in the process. I tried to "archive and install," meaning save my current OS but install the system software that came with the computer (10.4.4). Unfortunately, when it gets to the last minute of installing the second DVD, all progress stops and it just hangs there. Now it's stuck in this mode and asks for the DVD every time I restart. Apple is sending me a new DVD to try. Getting pretty p***ed at Apple, even though I'm a devout lifelong follower...

Add me to the list of frustrated Mac devotees!!
I have tried all of the points in the various forums. None solve the problem. I have pretty much concluded the problem is associated with whether you have security set on your wireless router. If I disable wireless security (I use WEP password) I do not get a drop connection every 2-3 min.
Of course my whole neighborhood thanks me for providing them Internet access!! Just to add insult to injury, my work laptop PC has never had any problem connecting with WEP password security.

Update
I changed over to using WPA Shared Key security on my router and MacBook and that seems to work fine. I have yet to drop my wireless connection and it automatically restores after waking from sleep.

i've received a rash of calls during the past few weeks about wifi dropouts. the fact is, there is no fix...and i've tried every workaround in every thread i could find on the matter.
i'm connected via ethernet for now. i plan to dust off my sonicwall tzw in the coming days (even though it only offers "b" and wep) to give myself wireless connectivity at home.
i'm sure apple will figure this one out...the sooner the better.

Hi,
don't touch the router - it's a problem connected to 10.4.8. Better reinstall the system and upgrade to 10.4.7 and everything works well. Don't forget to disable the automatic updates or else it will install 10.4.8 resulting in the same kind of problems.

Hi zandra,
reinstall the system. Download the 10.4.7 update from Apple's support page. Disable the automatic software updates to avoid getting upgraded to 10.4.8.
After trying out every recommended solution I found in several forums for 2 weeks, that's the only one that worked.

And to do this (go back to 10.4.7), can I simply pop in my DVDs and reinstall (of course making a backup of the drive first), or should I wipe the hard drive and then reinstall?

I recommend backing up the drive and doing a clean install (wiping the harddrive). I made some bad experiences installing an older version over a newer a few months ago.

Thanks stefwolf.
Does this wireless problem seem to affect only Intel Macs? My G5 iMac is constantly dropping my connection. If the problem reported in this and other threads only applies to Intels, maybe I have a different problem?

I should clarify my last statement... Even my 10.3.9 computers are having problems with the connection dropping. Could it all be related to 10.4.8 on my iMac? I thinking it is because I wasn't having issues until I installed 10.4.8.

i have clients who are on 10.3.9 and 10.4.8 who are all having disconnects. i figured the 10.4.8 update caused the issue on tiger boxes. the thought never occurred tome that 10.3.9 might be causing it on panther.
maybe it's a security update issue for both? none of my 10.4.7 or 10.3.8 clients are having these problems. i'm on ethernet at home until this is resolved...bummer.
