taking an hour+ to only half fill with music?
Posted: Nov 3, 2006 12:13 AM

got my new shuffle (no need to mention all the good stuff about this wee thing), plugged it in, updated firmware etc all with no problems and all in all it appears to be working fine but transfering music seems to be taking ages. it's taken over an hour and is just over half full...i've had a listen and the songs are there and sound fine so not having any of the other problems folk have mentioned but surely it shouldn't take this long? i read somewhere else that someone had filled their shuffle in 5 mins.
for info: it's plugged into a usb2. it's not had a full charge yet.

Solved

do you have the convert to 128 acc enabled?

You may have a USB2 port, but did the device mount as a 2.0 device or did it get enumerated as a USB1.1 device? You can check in Device manager

Yes, that'll be slowing it down quite a bit- it's got to re-encode all of your files as it's loading. You can fit more songs on, but the time hit is the problem.

weird.. it took mine about 4 minutes to load 240+songs. sounds like a computer issue to me.

dtdtdt,

Yes, having the convert songs to a 128 kbps bitrate will slow the transfer down.

How many songs are you working with? What bit rate were they originally encoded at? What speed processor are you working with? How much RAM? What is the length of the individual songs?

All of those will be factors when converting a song.

You can try converting 5 songs, and timing them to get an idea of how long converting all of your songs will take.

Thank you,

Nathan C.

Yes, even on a Mac - which by all accounts has slower USB xfer rates, it only took a couple of minutes to copy mine to full - not using "convert to 128kbs"

It took mine about an hour: I switched on the convert, because I use apple loseless and higher file sized mp3s.

Running on a MBP 17 with 2GB of Ram, so it is not a computer issue it is the fact that it reencodes as it is filling it up.

I am having the same problem with the files being transferred super slow, even without the extra conversion. In the Device manager, how can you tell if the device is enumerated as USB 1 or 2? My enumerator just says "USB", nothing else. Also, if it is enumerated incorrectly, how do you change it? And, yes I am using a dedicated USB2 PCI card that is WHQL certified. This would help me out a great deal as my Nano also takes far more time to sync than it should - 1 hour for 4 Gigs. I never had this problem when Apple was using Firewire. Thanks.

In the Device Manager under 'Universal Serial Bus controllers,' if you see an entry labeled 'USB2 Enhanced Host Controller' you have USB 2.0. If not, you have the slower USB 1.1.

Thanks for responding. I can see that the USB Controller is definitely 2.0, but how can you tell that the device (shuffle) is being handled as a Hi-Speed device? I really think that my computer handles both of my iPods as Low Speed even though they are connected to a Hi Speed port. And it's only my iPods that transfer slowly, nothing else. My external hard drive can transfer a 4 Gig file in 2-3 minutes.

A single 4GB file vs. a bunch of files totaling 4GB and there will be a big difference in how long it takes. This is because of the way USB works.

True. There should be a difference, but not a 2 hour difference. It takes about 45 seconds for 1, 4 meg song to transfer, without any extra conversion. The only other device that took that long was my old Intel MP3 player that was USB 1.1 only. And you haven't answered my question. How can I tell what speed the computer has assigned to the device? And if it is the wrong speed assignment, how do I change it? Thanks.

With a USB 2.0 device, which the iPod is, your computer should automatically detect it as such if it has the high-speed ports. Now it's possible but not likely that your computer has both types of USB ports. You might want to try them all on your computer and see if there's a difference. If you have a desktop, the ones on the rear are the best choice.
