Cannot open https sites

I realize this has been posted already; but after trying all the solutions offered, my last recourse is posting here.
Here's the issue: https sites won't load on WebKit browsers; they work fine with Gecko browsers, however.
Problems happened after installing Cisco VPN client on MacBook. Security update -007 run before installing client. I have tried removing the VPN client by "hand' and with Terminal commands. Have played with the keychain; have fiddled with network preferences. No luck.
I suspect this has something to do with security update -007 fixing (breaking?) vpn issues, though before installing the Cisco client, my WebKit browsers were working fine.
Thanks for any help.

I don't think this is related to the VPN software: I installed just the security update and I have problems with Safari too. I also have problems with Mail: it won't read my .Mac account using SSL+IMAP and my ISP mail using SSL+POP (without SSL it works fine).
I installed Firefox and Thunderbird and I can use them to access https sites and read my .Mac email using SSL+IMAP.

I am also having problems with https sites in safari, not being able to access .mac account mail and also not being to access .mac the sync or advanced settings in System Preferences.
I have had these problems since 30th. I have just today gone back to a earlier backup prior to the security update -007 update I put on but find that the problems are still there. This backup was working fine when using it on 28th.
has anyone find a solution to getting things working again?

Thanks for your replies. I was assuming that the vpn client did it since the problem was noticed after installation, not after the security update.
I hope Apple is working on this; it does indeed seem to be a system problem.

As to ssl, I wonder if the issues are related to system software and/or Apple's own applications.
For email, I use Entourage and several of my accounts require ssl. No problems thus far sending or receiving email.
SSL also seems to be working fine with Gecko browsers. Only WebKit versions are giving me serious problems on secure sites.
Hmm. Still stumped.

Well, Thunderbird (Mozilla Email) also works fine to access the .Mac account with SSL+IMAP. Could it be that these applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, Entourage) don't use the SSL libraries from Apple but have their own SSL libraries?

I too can not open a few SSL sites with Safari, but Firefox works well on all of them. I tried removing all things related to Safari & reloading the latest version I could find (2.02) but to no avail. On my home Dual-450 G4, however, Safari works fine. Both may work and home machines hae the same software versions. This seems to be a G5 problem.
Anybody else have any clues?

The problem is resolved? There is one https site in particular I can't access - with Safari or Firefox (Mac or PC). Since it is a site I must access for my job, it is imperative I find a solution - other than buying a PC with Internet Explorer. The college is saying it has to do with my personal browser settings, but I had been able to access it until three weeks ago.
I'm not as knowledgable as some of the others on here about what I should be looking for if I want to determine if it's my browser settings, or if it's a problem at their end. Any ideas?

I have been having the exact problem with Safari, but for me, it's been since the 10.4.9 update. HTTPS sites just don't work anymore in Safari. I've emptied cache, cookies, trashed certain files, including keychains, and restarting, etc, and all to no avail. I don't really understand why the topic is resolved, either. Every post pertaining to this problem is effectively unresolved. I really would appreciate a more comprehensive look at this from Apple. FireFox has quickly become my prepared browser, because it works as expected.

I am having the exact problem. I have for years been able to use my vpn setup with no issues. I also noticed that if I drop the vpn connection I can access the https sites. But this is not an option. I hope Apple addresses this soon...

Hi Nebula1400,
In Safari preferences-> Security tab, show cookies, first delete all associated cookies then set your cookies to "Always"for the site.
Try using Opera it seems to be able
to access some sties that Safari & Firefox can not.
The other thing to try is to enable the Debug menu in Safari, if it isn't already.

Hi snoho, did you do this below?
Do this Quit Safari, click on he Finder icon in your Dock
Go to Home~Library/Preferences folder, locate the following filecom.apple.security.revocation.plist and move it to the trash.
Have you tried accessing said sites from a freshly created test account?
If not, worth a shot imo, if iyou can not not access it from there.
I would recommend doing a reapplication of the OS Combined update
using the steps underlined in Macmaps, abrody's website.
Good luck, I hope it helps some.
