as u can see on the subject i have a imac g5, with isight, that, since few days ago, has a line of pixel (a vertical line of one pixel of width) in white...
do u have previos experience in this?
i think is the monitor, the lcd panel, but to change the lcd panel will be really a big expense and i'm now out of the warranty...
no way to solve the problem in a different way?

i have exactly the same model of computer, i think, and i have a near identical problem:
a vertical line of pixels not white, but a very light yellow.. its almost in the centre of the screen.
i, too, am out of warranty now..
i checked the link provided in the response, but my serial number does not correspond to any of those given.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

this may or may not be of any relevance, but i thought i should say:
the back of the computer is all relatively cool, except the (as you look at it) top right corner which is positively burning.
is this connected?

sibreen, if you are concerned, suggest that you take your computer to your nearest AASP since you do not have AppleCare & you do not qualify for the AEP.

I have posted this on another thread too. But for anyone reading it might be useful.
I had a line appear on my iMac G5 17" 2 GHz about four months outside the one year warranty. Apple are not interested in my problem. The serial number wasn't in the range covered by th extended warranty.
Since then no more lines have appeared on my G5. Looked at replacing the screen here in the UK at a cost of £534 for parts only. On the basis that I can get a brand new Dell 17" for £90 I consider that spare price to be a major rip off.
This is my solution: I've tested an external monitor and it works fine, no lines at all. So, now rather than buying an new 24" iMac I'll buy a 24" dell for about £100 less than the apple spare and use that as my monitor on the iMac. That way I get a nice large workspace for less than the price of the spare. I could of course connect a smaller 17" Dell up to my iMac.
By the way both of the Dell monitors have three year warranty as standard. Test out and see if an external monitor works.

As far as I can tell Apple does not Care. According to all of these "chats", many are experiencing the same issues. My Imac G5, 2.0, 17", is , of course, out of warranty. Solution: Spend $300plus for a new LCD module. Sorry, but I feel there are too many identical complaints for this to be anything other than a common issue that Apple should address with a FREE LCD module. Let's all write to Steve and see if we can't get some attention. My monitor has gone from a single pixel line, to many, to a large 3" black bar that renders my viewing area to the size of a postcard. I couldn't be more disappointed with Apple after 10 years of faithful worship. I can't even find the part on line so that I could replace myself. If that sounds like I am a repair person...not so. But between the Imac G5 1.8 20" at work and my Imac G5, 2.0, 17" at home I have had to physically replace faulty memory, superdrive, and the mid plane in both units. Not to mention the ridicule I am receiving at work for having demanded I use a mac in their PC environment.

I have the same problem. I have a single yellow line half way between center and right edge, two months out of warranty. I wrote to the support feedback box suggesting a trade in value for these defective Imacs. But, I got no responce. It's funny how they discontinued the 17" Imac all together. I also suggested some Mac pros scan these disscussions and help us out. Where are the Mac pros? I think every one with this problem should click on contact us and write your feelings to Mac, or we'll all be looking at these annoying lines for a while.

Hi everyone
What is the best way to make Apple recognize the problem, I mean collectively or individually ? And then how to proceed, how to unite etc... ?

My Imac now has four vertical lines. I've sent this complaint to the local Newspaper in Singapore. Hopefully they will publish it and wake Apple up.

I didn't realize how many people are effected, but Dell has similar problems and a different solution than Apple, of course since my line appeared I have not bought my planned for Intel Apple, cause a five hundred dollar working PC looks better in some ways than a defective iMac that cost two grand.
Any way enjoy, or not:
Best practice example – from a PC manufacturer
On Vincenzo Acinapura’s powerbook17lines.blogspot.com blog, Anonymous said...
Seems like some other laptops out there have had very similar vertical line issues. Dell have responded to complaints that several models of laptops fitted with 17" displays were developing vertical lines similar to what we have been witnessing with the 17" PowerBooks. Dell have agreed to fix their faulty products. http://...
You can read more about them in the following link:
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/04/09/10675.aspx
At least some companies understand their responsibility to their customers. I suggest if any people call Apple regarding their problem that they mention this link.
Well done Dell for treating your customers with the respect they deserve on this one. Apple has a lot to learn!
24 April 2007 13:50:00 PDT
Meanwhile, Dell customers with defective 17inch notebook PCs are getting top notch customer service:
The Customer Advocate team has coordinated with other Dell groups to help figure out what was happening with some 17" notebook displays.
Here's what they found: on some 17” LCD displays shipped with Dell Inspiron 9200, 9300 and Dell XPS Gen 2 notebooks, a one pixel wide vertical line may develop across the LCD screen over time. Systems that may be affected by this issue shipped from Nov. 2004 through Oct 2006.
Here’s what we’re doing: for affected systems, Dell is offering to replace any LCD that develops a vertical line within three years of purchase, at no charge for parts and labor. Also, Dell will offer refunds to customers who paid Dell to replace defective LCDs with this issue.
Dell values our customers, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We will send letters to all potentially affected customers whose systems are out of warranty.
source
Hmmm... Dell scores top marks for customer satisfaction, while Apple tries to make the issue disappear by censorship of their Apple Discussions forums, and censuring some folks who post there on this issue. I’m surprised and disappointed that Apple’s customer relations reputation is lagging so shamefully far behind a PC manufacture on this issue.
As suggested, you might like to mention the stark contrast between Dell's repair program and Apple's response failure when you take action and contact AppleCare locally and Apple Inc in the USA.

Mine has 6 lines now. Spoke to them too, they said that if there are a lot of users with the same problem sending in their imacs, they might consider an extended warranty program. He can't comment how many though. I asked if we fix it now and Apple decided to extend the warranty later, can we get a refund. They said we can write in for a refund but no guarantees. I think Apple is getting too big and arrogant, not caring about their customers. I just bought a HP Compaq laptop, should have stuck to PCs instead of this integrated all-in one expensive mess.
