Connection to AFP server unreliable
Posted: May 22, 2007 5:29 PM

When my users edit files on our AFP server running 10.4.9 server they report intermittent network errors when they try to save files that they have created and are editing on the server. There is nothing in the AFP logs that suggests the cause. This has been happening roughly since the last security update, around April 19.

Any suggestions?

Suggestions...not yet, but does this happen with any particular app, or with all apps. Are they using network homes, portable homes, or just connecting to the file server and using local homes? Have you checked the client logs?

Not that I can necessarily help, but this would be helpful info ;-)

They are using local homes and connecting to the server. They report the problem with MS Office, because that is mostly what they use. The client logs would be the one thing I haven't checked. I will take a look at them today.

Try switching off the AutoRecover feature. Its set to every 10 minutes in the application preferences pane.

Auto recover was turned off. I turned it on. Now they report that when working locally and copying the file back to the server, they get a file in use error. lsof doesn't show the file to be in use.

The problem went away when the server was rebooted.

Well, that's good for now. I'd still be suspicious of Office. IMHO, it doesn't always play nice with networks. There's a chance there was just a burp, but I woudn't be surprised if issues came up again.
