iTunes Plus is appalling

I am sure many others will agree with me when I say that iTunes Plus is appalling and clearly the mechanism to serve these new files is not ready for primetime. I have now been waiting a day for my new album, its simply not good enough and the fact that Apple has the termerity not to do anything about it is even worse.
Apple, fix it! Come on it can't be that hard surely? I don't understand why the introduction of DRM free files should be so difficult. Personally I think its iTunes 7.2 that is causing the problem. iTunes at the moment, just downloading 6 songs, stalled at that is using over 40% of processor time!
I hope these new songs are worth it! If this had happened when the iTMS was first launched, I doubt it would be the success it is today.

The problem is lots of people upgrading songs hammering the iTunes store.
Please let us know when you have invented an internet that is not affected by bandwidth issues.

Somehow I imagine it's a lot harder than it looks to bring a new system online and have thousands/millions of people all trying to download from it at the same time within minutes of it going live.
I'm sure it will sort itself out pretty fast.

Cander: rubbish! Lots of people upgrading their songs wouldn't bring a service like iTunes to its knees. This is not a bandwidth issue IMHO, come on, even if if was a bandwidth it shouldn't take 24 hours to a download 10 MB song, thats slower my an order of magnitude then a dial up connection. I would say if, every single song was DRM free this might be the case. Are you trying to tell me that people only have EMI stuff? I don't think so. There has to be another reason.
Mike, whats so different. There is nothing different in serving DRM free songs than regular songs. A price difference yes but thats it. Maybe I am missing something. As I stated, whilst iTunes 7.2 was thinking about downloading it was using 40% plus of my CPU.

If it's not Plus song upgraders, then it IS something.
I have been using the iTunes store since 5am Eastern time, and you can't browse or preview anything without Connection trouble, Rebuffering the stream over and over, hanging crashes of iTunes, etc.
What I REALLY hate is that iTunes HANGS if the network is slow.
COME ON, Apple, give us a break (Literally: Give is a way to ABORT slow connections, so that iTunes doesn't HANG with the beachball of death)

Its a brand new service involving lots of multiple purchases of large files by tons of people. I am more inclined to believe that it's server related.

What exactly is new? This bit I am struggling with. Its no different that when Apple say adds a new TV show to the iTS surely. Again I its not like every song on everybodies account is now DRM free. Plus there are people who will be unwilling to upgrade.
Whatever the problem, it should be addressed soon because this is very frustrating and very un-Apple like.

I would tend to think it's server related as well, but only Apple knows for sure.
The iTunes Plus album that I decided on impulse to purchase this morning (Debussy's La Mer w/Simon Rattle conducting) is only about halfway through downloading after six hours, and at the current rate it will probably be finished tomorrow.
Suffice it to say that I won't consider another iTunes Plus purchase until Apple resolves the download speed problem.

This may be "piling on" but I agree that iTunes Plus service is simply horrible. I have been trying to download this version of the 1812 Overture for two days with zero success.
I keep getting Error 504 and Error 9006.
iTunes Plus service needs to be restored to what I've gotten used to with the original iTunes software and quickly.

Initially, I also thought it was down to Bandwidth but that doesn’t explain why if you pause all downloads then click on individual tracks some will download within seconds. Most of them don’t download (or try to download then crash). What makes matters worse is that when there is a problem the error message that pops up stops all the waiting downloads and it doesn’t retry until you have clicked on “ok.” Out of 115 songs waiting to download since Wednesday only 21 have been successfully and they have taken hours.

That was my initial thought as well but it doesn't appear to be the case: I had two albums to upgrade. One downloaded at the same breakneck speeds as usual while the other has been stuck for two days now. Unless it's a question of certain songs being served from different clusters - which is possible.
But you'd think this would be fixed after 48 hours...

I agree with Jade - I had some tracks download like a greased pig up a drain, others still haven't completed after over 24 hours. There is more to this than bandwidth,

What I find really annoying is the total silence from Apple. For a company that places such emphasis on accessibility and usability they do not seem so good at owning up when they have got it wrong. They are still promoting the service with not a mention of the teething problems.

I suspect that this is a case of left-hand and right-hand not knowing what is going on. Support will be schooled in (and have the scripts for) known issues. This, as far as they are concerned is not a known-issue.
We have known knowns... etc. - You know the script.
Somebody at the server farm will be aware. Somebody in charge of roll out of iTunes Plus will be aware.
Support will not be, yet, as there will be a hope that this can be resolved without TOO much attention and hence media notice.
I would do the same.
