During a call phone goes from 3G to 2G but not Vice Versa

Hi all!

Just wanted to see if something I am seeing is normal. I made a call from my house which is in a 3G area. I drove out of town on the call and during the call my phone switched to EDGE. That worked perfectly with no problem. The problem I had was on the way back. I made a call while on EDGE and then when I got home, back in the 3G area, it stayed on EDGE and I could not (while still on the call) access my e-mail or internet from my phone. Is that the way the phone is designed? To hop from 3G to EDGE, but once on EDGE not to go back? Just want to make sure there is not a problem with my phone.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

It is possible that the iPhone switched from 3G to Edge because there was no 3G signal which would be a good reason for it not to switch back to 3G if it cannot acquire a 3G signal that is acceptable.

I believe that the iPhone 3G will switch back and forth depending on the strength of the signal that it can acquire.

You're right. One would have lost 3G if they wandered outside the range of the 3G service. However, there have been issues with the iPhone automatically switching BACK over to 3G after reentering the 3G area.

A temporary solution for this problem is to switch "airplane mode" on, then back off after a few seconds. The iPhone then reconnects to 3G.

Not just entering a 3G area but you also need the 3G signal to be stronger than the signal for Edge. I do not know how much more domineering a signal has to be to overcome a previously used signal, e.g., Edge to 3G or 3G to Edge.

Hey all,

Thank you for your input. Just to clarify where I drove to I knew was not an area with 3G coverage. So it switched from 3G to EDGE as I expected it to. My concern was that once I got back home (on a call I made from the EDGE network) it never switched back over. It signal strength is what it makes its decisions on that makes sense. At my house I get full signal on EDGE, but only around three bars of 3G.
