Can I replace iphone 3G battery with battery from a 2G iphone?

A friend gave me a broken 2G that apparently has a fresh battery? My 3G battery lasts about 5 minutes. Can I put the 2G battery into the 3G phone? Are they compatible?

Thanks for any help.

The battery inside the first generation (2G) IPHONE (4GB, 8GB, and 16GB) is soldered to the motherboard. The battery inside the IPHONE 3G is not soldered, but is almost as hard to access and replace. The iPhone 2G uses a 1400mAh 3.7V battery, while the iphone 3G uses a 1146mAh 3.7V battery. So, no, it won't work, or I should say it would be pretty difficult.

These folks offer battery replacement for as low as $20.00. Why mess with it yourself:
