Disappearing Favorites in Finder sidebar under OS X 12.x

I would like to reiterate a previous post.

I also have the problem that items in the Finder sidebar disappear randomly from time to time.

The standard speculation seems to be that the plist file gets corrupted. I would also like to reiterate the followup question, which is *why* does the plist file regularly get corrupted?

That's most likely not what's happening. What's most likely is people accidentally click on the caret to the right of the word Favorites.
