iCloud web on Firefox cannot use security key to login

It says "This browser doesn’t support security keys, Try another browser to sign in with your security key." But I can login Apple Discussions with security key in same browser.

It does seems like some Apple websites work, while others just give an error, which just goes to prove that it can work, they just don't want it to (or forgot to enable the feature).

Here's a list of the domains where I have been able to use my security key on Firefox (Windows) :

  • security.apple.com
  • discussions.apple.com
  • idmsa.apple.com (login with Apple on 3rd-party websites). This one used to work, but it seems like they changed those URLs to appleid.apple.com and now I get an error

Broken websites include :

  • appleid.apple.com
  • icloud.com
  • store.apple.com

Which are arguably the three most important ones...

For better chances of being heard, maybe the issue should be reported on https://www.apple.com/feedback/ if enough people do it they might listen...

This is ridiculous!

I'm in Firefox on Windows 11 right now. Get the same answer as above when trying to login into iCloud.

But when logging in right here, to write this answer, my Yubikey works in Firefox with Apple.com. Haha

I was hopeful that "Trust this browser" might carry over to the iCloud signin....but it doesn't...

Unfortunately the Windows iCloud app also doesn't support hardware-keys at this time. Hopefully this will be resolved by Apple.

Hello WordlessEcho,

In order to resolve this issue, you will need to use the Safari browser to sign in using your security key.

You can also use other devices to use the Find My services. This article shows you how: Find My Support

Best Regards.

I think it has been established previously, that Apple consider this forum to be for users only. They do not act on anything posted here. In order to get Apple's attention, we need to submit feedback through their appointed channel. That channel is the Product Feedback page.

Please visit that page and choose to submit feedback on "iCloud" (scroll down).

I used the Edge browser and that accepted the key for logging in to iCloud on my Windows 10 PC.

I found this post and had to create a log in for the community. I did this in Firefox and it allowed me to verify myself with the Yubikey. I tried to log in again to iCloud and was still unable to do so with the key. Strange.

I didn't try with Chrome as I prefer not to use it as a browser.

Firefox has supported FIDO2 security keys since 66.0.32(!)

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/66.0/releasenotes/

That was in 2019 https://wiki.mozilla.org/Release_Management/Calendar

Authentication with Security keys does work in Firefox for https://discussions.apple.com/ but not for https://icloud.com/ (as many have already pointed out)

Something has clearly been missed when it comes to icloud.com and that should be corrected.

I think Apple doesn't really read these forums?

How do we report this correctly so that Apple is alerted?

The strangest thing just happened to me while I wanted to give Kilikok's answer a "helpful" rating.

discussions.apple.com asked me to sign in and it prompted me to insert my security key. Just for giggles I tried it and the first two times it gave me the "This browser doesn't support blabla" warning, but on the third try it randomly worked!

I'm on Firefox 110.0.1, Windows 10 22H2. Each time Windows asked me to input my Yubikey's Security Pin.

Confirmed that this iCloud.com issue still persists. Tested with both USB-C and USB-A keys on Firefox. Meanwhile, no issues whatsoever on Edge and Chrome.

As others have pointed out, the problem is limited to only some Apple websites. I was able to successfully use my security keys to log into this website.
