Cellular network off after 17.4.1 update

Last night I updated to the most recent version, 17.4.1, and today my cellular network suddenly dropped and quit working. I tried everything I could think of, restarting, turning airplane mode on for a bit and back off, etc. nothing. So I called my carrier, AT&T and two different people could not figure out why my phone wouldn’t work.

I figure it was the update. Now when I go into general in settings and about, I get the pop up that I need to update my carrier settings but when I click update, it closes the window and does nothing. I NEED my phone for work and I’m getting nowhere. I’m hoping someone else has this issue or at least Apple knows what they messed up and will release a fix soon because I need to be able to make calls and right now my phone makes no calls unless it’s through Facebook messenger over WiFi.

Help!? Anyone?

I have this same issue. The "genius" at the Apple store told me they could try to replace a part but they'd have to order it which could take awhile. They factory reset my phone, but my restore from iCloud won't work, so I walked out of the store with my same phone factory reset to out of the box settings so at least I can make calls/send messages. Verizon is overnighting me a phone, so I'm going to try and restore from iCloud on the new one and see if that works. Otherwise, no real solution at the moment.

Just fixed this issue at the apple store, but hopefully you can do it on your own.

I had to restore my phone from my most recent iCloud backup. It will keep your eSIM, so you won’t have to worry about that! I was having the same issue and no issues came up in the diagnostics they ran at the store. Deleting and re-adding my eSIM didn’t work. But restoring my phone did! Kind of an annoying and time consuming fix, but I’d recommend trying that.(I have an iPhone 14 Pro for context)

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

I just went through this whole ordeal of having my cellular service randomly stop working on my iPhone 14. It began with my “MMS” settings not being available on my phone, then iMessage stopped working, then escalated to no cellular data, and inability to make or receive calls. After hours of AT&T and Apple insisting there was no issue and trying every troubleshooting tip recommended, I ended up doing a full factory reset. This fixed the issue!!! From my experience with this bizarre apple glitch i would recommend trying the factory reset, as long as you have everything backed up. Save yourself the time of having both of these companies tell you there’s no issue when there clearly is.

If anyone at Apple is seeing this, as they should since it’s an official Apple Community, what is the status with this issue? As you can see, many people have this same problem atm. I’ve had 3 visits to the Apple Store in the last month, tried everything possible, followed all possible instructions, I reinstalled iOS 17.4.1 in the store, I didn’t restore from backup, as it was assumed maybe the back up was corrupted, and I redownloaded everything, all the apps, manually from the cloud. The problem is still there. My carrier connection only works intermittently, and my battery is being drained because it keeps connecting all the time. Luckily, unlike others here, I can still connect to WiFi and use my phone at home, at work, or anywhere I have access to a WiFi. But my phone calls still drop suddenly. It’s not the carrier’s issue. I checked with them too.

Is there any official acknowledgment of this huge problem for so many? Any timeline until it’s going to be fixed? Anyone at Apple?!

Had this same issue on my 14 plus for 5 days w/o service, finally got it resolved by:

  • Delete eSim
  • Reset Network Settings
  • Backup iPhone
  • Erase All Contents and Settings
  • Re-Setup Phone from Backup
  • Re-Set eSim from carrier

I tried the first couple of items first without erasing the phone with no luck, so had to resort to the factory reset.

I have two iPhones — the 12 Pro and the 14. Around the same time, both devices stopped working with eSIM on firmware version 17.4.1, with a two-week difference between them. I tried all the usual troubleshooting steps:

  • Restarting the phone
  • Turning airplane mode on and off for 15 seconds
  • Resetting network settings
  • Performing a full reset with data erasure

In both cases, the reset with data erasure led to complete mobile service failure, affecting both physical SIM and eSIM.

For the iPhone 14, updating to version 17.5 through restore from 17.4.1 solved the problem. However, for the iPhone 12 Pro, updating to 17.5 only worsened the situation. I tried everything possible, contacted Apple Support, and followed all their recommended steps. I also visited the Apple Genius Bar and explained what had been done. Their only suggestions were:

  • Replace the motherboard (costing €550)
  • Trade in the phone and buy a new one

Ultimately, what worked for the iPhone 12 Pro was the following:

  • I downloaded the previous firmware version 17.4.1 from ipsw.me and flashed the phone using that firmware.
  • The only useful advice from the Apple Genius Bar was to flash the phone in recovery mode. To do this, you connect the phone to a computer with a cable, press the volume up and down buttons sequentially, and then hold the power button until the phone enters recovery mode (about 25 seconds). After this, hold the option key and select Restore, choosing the downloaded firmware.

After flashing to the previous firmware, the eSIM reappeared. I then updated to the latest firmware and was able to restore the phone from a backup.

My opinion of Apple has significantly deteriorated after this incident.
