Why can't I open books on my MacBook Air?

When I try to read books on my MacBook an error code appears reading "Can't open "name of book" this file is formatted incorrectly or is not in a format that Apple Books can open". I have opened the same books on my iPhone and iPad with no issues. I have tried removing and redownloading the books, but I can not remove all of them. I have tried signing out and deleting the icloud data to resync but that also will not work and some purchases and sample books are still in my library.
