iPads not having current location

I have an iPad Pro a couple years old. Software updates are current. Does not have cellular. Have always used iPad maps app for routes, etc. Also used app for Polaris and Gaia GPS without issues up until a few days ago. Now it does not have GPS or cannot find current location for maps so they don’t work. Have rebooted several times. So I tried an older iPad which we used for same functions but now has same issues on gps and location. Is this an update issue?

Starting with fundamentals...

Only WiFi+Cellular models of iPad have GNSS/GPS capabilities - this being a function of the iPad Cellular chipset.

WiFi Only models of iPad have no GPS capabilities with which iPad Location Services can derive location. This fundamental difference may significantly impact your ability to use mapping or other Apps that require precise location data - in particular if real-time positioning (e.g., a moving map) is required. If using a mobile phone’s hotspot, be aware that the phone does not share GPS information derived from its own positioning capabilities.

WiFi Only iPad models can only “infer” their location from a database lookup of neighbouring WiFi networks for which the geographic location is known, or the geographic location of your public IP address. For static applications in urban locations, where the location of IP public IP addresses and WiFi networks are known, an “inferred” location can be relatively accurate. However, in rural locations, or when using a Cellular/Satellite/VPN connection, location accuracy of an inferred location [if it works at all] may be very inaccurate.

All models of iPad, whether WiFi Only or WiFi+Cellular, can use an external GNSS/GPS receiver to provide precise positioning data. If using an external GPS receiver with your iPad devices, if you see consistent issues with deriving accurate positioning, you should suspect a fault with the external receiver.

You're very welcome.

We all have to start somewhere - iPad and iPadOS being no different in this respect to any other device or computer.

All iPad models are available in two versions - WiFi+Cellular and WiFi Only, the latter being noticeably cheaper for the equivalent model. Many new buyers, with no obvious requirement for Cellular connectivity, sometimes choose the WiFi Only (i.e., non-Cellular) model to save some money.

While mentioned in the device specifications, it is perhaps not obvious that WiFi Only models also lack GNSS/GPS functionality - and this only becomes noticed when positioning capabilities are needed when away from a fixed WiFi network. This inevitably leads to frustration and subsequent disappointment.

More knowledgable users often, when purchasing, choose a WiFi+Cellular model iPad in preference to WiFi Only - for two fundamental reasons:

1) WiFi-Cellular models have built-in GNSS/GPS positioning (just like an iPhone).

2) While having no immediate need for Cellular, a Cellular connection can be provisioned directly from the iPad - if and when required.

As described in my earlier reply, it is possible to use a compatible third-party GNSS/GPS receiver to add GPS capabilities to any iPad - but, while viable, this is perhaps less convenient in that you now have a two-box solution.
