Printer sharing doesn't work with Sonoma on new imac

I have a Brother printer attached to my new iMac with Sonoma. I downloaded to it the appropriate printer driver and local printing works. However, we have another computer which used to be able to print to this same printer while I was using the old mac with Mojave. Now the other computer can no longer print. I enabled sharing as sown on the attachment. All I spend my time with is trying to figure out how to make things work with Sonoma.... Is there anything else I should try to make things work as prior to the new computer with Sonoma? Thanks

Excuse me? Facts are there in the links you yourself have posted, I can’t help if you’re leaping to unsaid conclusions.

Let’s recap. AirPrint support based on Brother specs is limited to Mobile Devices only. That’s what your link from Brother says. Additionally, I know for a fact that the obsolete and unsupported 2370DW doesn’t support AirPrint for Macs.

End of discussion? I sure hope so! 👋

Was referring to your Macs - your Brother doesn’t support them too, so n/a to both Windows and macOS. But thanks for the clarification.

What I’d do is connect the LAN port on your printer to a free port on the router. If the router is in a different room, use powerLAN to get then “landed”. That should get everyone to live happily again. Otherwise, there’s no going back or forward unfortunately - your printer is no longer supported by Brother and Sonoma can’t be reversed.

That page is useless: has no drivers for download (even for older macOS versions) - all recommend AirPrint which your printer doesn’t have. Still, I’d wait it out until the next Sonoma release and then make a call on whether to buy new.

FWIW, the 2350 works perfectly - IMO, way better buying now than popping Advil (which you’ll need for every call to Apple/Brother CS) hoping for a solution.

I am sorry hcsitas, but the solution to bugs is not to throw money to get new hardware. The solution is for vendors to test their software before release, fix the old bugs and not create new ones.... Buying a new printer would definitely help Brother and hardware vendors, but would not help me. There should be a method to somehow identify if the problem is with the printer software or Sonoma.

Brother confirmed what Jan Hedlund stated: this printer is supported and Airprint should work on it. However that doesn't solve my problem because I need the wirelessly connected Windows11 PC be able to also print on this printer. As I mentioned, this happened without a problem on the old imac with Mojave and the same printer, prior to me connecting the printer to the new imac with Sonoma.

Jan, thanks for trying to help. As my attached screen capture shows, I already enabled sharing (as in the link you posted). The Windows 11 computer that used to be able to print prior to Sonoma cannot use Airprint.

I see that a firmware update is available. I am concerned to apply it as I can print now at least from the iMac. If that's messed up then I cannot print anymore.

I cannot use Ethernet as the Windows computer is on the side of the house.

To clarify: I have no need to connect the old iMac to the printer, I am not using it. I just mentioned it because when I used to use it, (with the same printer connected to it), printing from the wirelessly connected Windows 11 computer was working. Only when I got a new iMac with Sonoma I could no longer print from the Windows 11 computer.

It is either Sonoma or something with the printer. Any suggestion for how to diagnose the problem or how to fix it?

Brother gave you a BS answer, your printer absolutely does not support AirPrint for Macs, mobile devices only. Take it from someone who’s had the same printer for over a decade and replaced it precisely for that reason: no AirPrint. Anyway, you’ve already ruled out AirPrint because it won’t work for Windows, so why are we (still) here?

If this is a Sonoma bug, maybe the next release will fix it. I seriously doubt it is or will be fixed, but waiting for the next update can’t hurt.

Otherwise, good intentions from Jan & co aside, heck even the bot-scripted Brother CS agent, you might as well face it: there’s no other choice other than to replace your printer.

You replaced your iMac with new didn’t you? A new brother costs pennies in comparison. So enough of the hand-wrenching already 😁 - just do it.

Very strange.... Your last post, Jan disappeared from here. It happened to some of my posts. I cannot imagine why.

What I want to try next is to disconnect the printer from the hub. Based on what you shared, I assume that printing should continue working from the new iMac with Sonoma (via Airprint) without doing anything else. Do I understand this correctly? The printer and the new iMac are on the same network. I want to make sure that printing will be still working at least from the new iMac before doing anything else. Please confirm and thanks.

I disconnected the printer from the USB port on the hub connected to one of the two USB ports of the new imac. I cannot print. I turned the printer on and off, it doesn't help. On the iMac, I am told that the PRINTER is OFF. I reconnected the printer and TG it works. So this wireless option doesn't seem to do what I assumed would do....As you can tell, I am not HW or SW expert. If something doesn't work as expected it is excruciatingly hard for me to figure it out. That's why I want to take it one step at a time. If I get in trouble I have nobody to help me.

In a prior post you said: "If the printer is wirelessly connected to the router, it should be

possible to print via Wi-Fi from the new iMac as well (if AirPrint is

not used, printer drivers or Brother iPrint&Scan will be needed)."

What do I need to do on the Apple side (if anything) to connect the printer wirelessly to the router (after disconnecting it from the hub) and to use Airprint (to print from the new iMac)? Is using Airprint "automatic" or do I have to do something to us it?

Thanks

I can see the post. Is "Sort By:" set to "Oldest"? Using "Best" can be confusing.

>The printer and the new iMac are on the same network.

OK, that means that the printer is wirelessly connected to the router.

>I assume that printing should continue working from the new iMac with Sonoma (via Airprint) without doing anything else.

If AirPrint (that is, the technology) is working, yes, without additional drivers. If AirPrint is not working for some reason, wireless printing as such should work, but an appropriate printer driver (or possibly Brother iPrint&Scan) would have to be installed.

EDIT: Just noticed your latest post. Separate reply.

Your printer doesn’t have AirPrint, required for WiFi Mac printing. Both are stated clearly on links from Brother. Their driver page doesn’t have any drivers for downloading for any OS, so inferring hope just on seeing a checkbox isn’t a good idea. It’s most likely an unmaintained page.

Replacing your printer is your only option for AirPrint + Sonoma. Be there, done that, ponied up the small change, haven’t looked back. You can too. All the best.
