Excel file corrupted or not valid and cannot open

I Tried to open excel file and get the following message

- File format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Any ideas?

Assuming you're using Excel on Mac, find the file in the Finder and Control-click on it, then click 'Get Info'. Make sure the entry under 'Name & Extension' is "[filename].xlsx". If it is, try changing it to "[filename].xls".
