Printer Drive/ Software for M2 Mac Mini

I have a canon Pixma MP495 and am wanting to get a drive for my printer. The driver for the printer stop at macOS Sierra. I am running macOS Sonoma 14.4.1. When I try to connect a printer there doesn't seem to be an option for a Canon printer in the system. Does anyone know of a generic printer/ scanner driver/ software for my printer.

Thanks, KCS017

Hi,

As you have noticed, Canon printer drivers for this model are not available for macOS 14 Sonoma. In fact, the latest CUPS driver appears to be for macOS 10.12 Sierra.

Sometimes, a printer driver for another model or series from the same manufacturer will work, but that would be entirely experimental.

There is also an experimental Gutenprint driver for the Canon PIXMA MP495, but it is unclear whether this would work with anything later than macOS 10.14 Mojave.

As always, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything. Software conlicts cannot be ruled out.

Be careful when looking for drivers on the Internet. There are a number of dubious "support" sites, often with misleading names. Download from a printer manufacturer's official web site, or from another trustworthy source such as Apple.

For scanning only, a third-party paid product (free trial version available) could possibly be of interest:

Apple's Image Capture as such may work, but the problem could be to find a compatible ICA driver.
