If that drive contains your only copy of that data it is already at risk of loss, at any moment, even if you were to do nothing.

Copy the data to another drive and then repartition. What you are describing would have put your data at risk anyway.

You need to back up the "important data" to another drive. In fact, good practice would be to have 2 backups on separate media.
