AirPods Pro (Gen 2) Microphone Automatically Disables

When playing music, for example, if you check the Audio MIDI Setup, you can see that the AirPods output device switches from 1 ch 32-bit Float 24.0 kHz to 2 ch 32-bit Float 48.0 kHz.

It appears that when the mic is active, the AirPods output device is locked to the 1 channel mode, and when the mic is inactive, it is allowed to switch to the 2 channel mode, which seems to disable the mic.

Is this the correct behavior?

Is there any way to force the mic to be active in the 2 channel mode?

This is causing audio issues for me, and I am having to resort to using the laptop mic instead to prevent my audio quality from dropping and connection issues occurring while I am on Teams calls.
