External HDMI monitor blinks black every few seconds

I have a Viotek 34" screen. When connected to Mac book via HDMI, either using an USB-C adapter or directly to Mac, the monitor blinks, goes black, every few seconds. Is this an upgrade it needs?

The HDMI cable you are using may have damage or dirt inside the connector.

If the display supports Thunderbolt 3 or later, a direct Thunderbolt cable from the Mac may be more viable. They look like USB-C cables except they have a lightning bolt on the connector. If the display supports Displayport, a displayport adapter with USB-C may also work better.

The vast majority of similar issues seen here are solved by using the correct cables for high-performance, high resolution displays. Generally, the cables required are not "regular" "found" cables, but cables acquired for exactly this purpose.

the Viotek 34 appears to be a 3440 by 1440 display (like the top half of a 4K display)

with 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.0

HDMI 2.0 is incapable of running a 4K display at 60 Hz, as is the M1 MacBook Pro, so HDMI on ONE cable may not work. That display COULD support using TWO input cables using Picture-By-Picture features in the display, and the "Arrange" feature in the Mac, to Create two Half-displays, Left-half and Right-half.

HDMI cables you want for HDMI-only Displays (higher resolutions than 720p TV sets) are marked as Certified with an anti-counterfeiting tag and are labeled:

"Premium High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "with Ethernet" --OR--

"Ultra High Speed HDMI cable" or that + "48G"

Cables with No Certification tags are good for your standard 720p TV set, and not much more.

HDMI was invented for HD TV sets. it works great at its original resolution of 720i or 720p. At higher resolutions, it quickly develops issues that are complex to solve, and the cables and adapters required to solve are NOT intuitive.
