Wrong GPS location with Wi-Fi ON after the update to 17.5-ONLY on my IPhone

Hello everyone,

Can you help me clarify this?

Being connected to the WiFi network at home, after the update to IOS17.5, I found that when I open any map app( Google Maps, Waze or others) I am located in another part of my city, so the location shown is wrong. As soon as I turn off the WiFi, and stay connected to the mobile network, the location is correct. I didn't have this problem before. Has anyone else encountered this situation?

I realized something: It seems that only if I am connected to the 5Ghz network of my home router I have this problem, if I connect to the 2.4Ghz network of the same router or to another network from another router in the same location I have no problem. I have reset the problem router several times, but it behaves identically on the 5GHz band.

What is very strange is that the problem only manifests itself on my phone connected to that 5Ghz network.

If I have another phone (for example an older Android phone) or Windows laptop and I connect to the exact same network and open Google Maps or another app with location, this location is done correctly.

Could this be an issue in the update to IoS 17.5?

Seems a bit of a coincidence that I noticed the problem the very next day.

Before, it certainly didn't manifest itself.

Thanks!

To resolve your iPhone's device-specific issue try this...

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. Reset Network Settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings: Only network settings are removed.
    1. When you reset network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings that weren’t installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Wi-Fi is turned off and then back on, disconnecting you from any network you’re on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain turned on.
    2. To remove VPN settings installed by a configuration profile, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the configuration profile, then tap Remove Profile. This also removes other settings and accounts provided by the profile. See Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone in this guide.
    3. To remove network settings installed by MDM, go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management, select the management, then tap Remove Management. This also removes other settings and certificates provided by MDM. See “Mobile device management (MDM)” in the iOS Deployment Reference.
    4. Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
  3. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution! Please look in the right direction.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

@viorel759 your user name hints as possibly Eastern European. Please be aware there have been reports of random GPS anomalies in large areas of Eastern Europe, probably linked to the invasion and war in Ukraine. There are several different SatNav constellations now in service, so your devices might not all be using the same satellites at any time. All it takes is one defective satellite passing overhead (or interference and jamming) to break the fix on one specific system while the others continue to work OK.

However, your description suggests to me that there is a problem with "Assisted GPS" which looks up locations for the locally detected WiFi networks based on their SSID, and factors their recorded locations into the position fix. This is particularly likely to happen when the receiving device is inside a building, with direct satellite signals obstructed by the structure. Is it possible the name (SSID) of your 5GHz network is duplicated somewhere else in your city and the A/GPS is selecting a conflicting location? You could probably test this if you are able to change the router's SSID.

I want to thank you for your prompt responses!

It seems to have resolved itself in the following way:

I had to leave the location for half an hour, so I used the GPS on my phone and was basically out of router range in that time. I came back and probably on returning to the local WiFi network I got a different IP, different from the previous one, routing probably done properly.

Thanks for the support!
