Video and audio skips when I plug my Mac into an hdmi cable

I have a Macbook pro Ventura 13.5.1. My sound works perfectly fine but when I plug an hdmi cable from the TV to my Mac the sound and switch the sound output to HDMI, the sound goes all wacky and doesn't work properly. It also makes the film/video I am trying to watch skip a bunch so it doesn't run smoothly but only when I want the sound output to be from the TV not my laptop. I can't watch anything.

Does this mean my Mac is broken or is there something wrong with my settings?

The cable itself could be faulty. Some cables also include built-in ethernet, which try to network the Mac to the TV.

If you want the audio to come out on the TV, you need to use Audio Midi Setup utility to ensure the audio is going out on HDMI, and the TV has the correct frequenty and bitrates support over HDMI. If only doing stereo, it should be 16bit 44.1 kHz.
