In Numbers how do you get a SUM total for a filtered range of cells in a column as in the Excel formula

In Excel one can filter a range of cells in a column which has had a total for the whole column calculated previously and entered in a cell at the bottom of the column as in =SUM(Cell 1 : Cell 2). The SUM total changes to give a SUM total as in =SUM(9, Cell 1: Cell 2). This is constantly updated as the filtering parameters are changed. How can the same information be obtained in numbers without having to divide the column into separate sections with each section devoted solely to the parameter being used to differentiate the information from the rest of the column?
