Locked out of my MacBook Air

I am on the reset password screen and it spins and spins then rejects the (correct) password I enter, but also says that the computer is not connected to the internet. (It very well is.) it suggests I receive next using the toolbar, but there is no toolbar on this page!! I see others have had this issue in the past, but I did not find a solution. I would greatly appreciate any ideas.
