Time Stamp on Messages?

I need my iphone 4 to show the time/date stamp on every message. Right now, it looks like it inexplicably only shows the stamp after a certain time gap has passed, and I don't see a setting for it. Where is that set?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I have that same annoyance as well. I don't really know the exact time my messages were sent/received and it only doesn't every so often.

If a new message from the same sender is received within 10 minutes of the previous one, the time stamp is not displayed. If greater than 10 minutes, it is. There is no setting to change this.

Is that by design, or just an oversight by Apple? Surely they could not have thought everyone would want/need it that way? Any plans to fix it in an upgrade?

No idea. It is what it is.

IMO, it's not a big deal.... if within 10 minutes, I don't care about the exact time it was sent.

dunno if this helps anyone but i just discovered this in the Messages app in 10.8 (not sure if there is a similar function on iphone):

View > Messages > Show as Compact

shows timestamp on every message.

the new iOS 7 has timestamps for all messages, swipe on the screen from right to left..

Thanks, eXtremist87, I'm new to the iphone and then a few days later the new iOS 7 came out and I'm learning again. I like seeing the time on my messages. Swiping on the screen works!

I didn't like the compact view, but I just realized that you can also let the mouse cursor hover over message for a few seconds to see the exact time stamp in OS X.

And thanks for the tip about swiping in iOS – it works great and I had no idea...
