iPhone carrier unlock - how to check?

My iPhone 3GS commpleted it's contract and I requested the carrier to unlock it.
They say it's unlocked now.

Apart from checking with other carrier SIMs, is there a way to check that the phone is unlocked now?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4

Normally, you would put a different carrier's sim in the phone, connect the phone to iTunes and receive a message: 'Congratulations your iPhone is Unlocked". Have you done this? You could also restore your phone from your most recent backup, with a different carrier's sim installed. No error messages, you're good to go.
