doesnt have a valid sim now. have used it before. the iphone is not unlocked.

What do you mean by 'fix'? What are you trying to do? To work as a phone, you need a valid SIM. If you're in the USA, then you need an AT&T SIM and an account with them. Again, we need more info.
i want to be able to use it as an ipod. i dont want it to work as a phone. i was just thinking maybe there is a way that i can jailbreak it and use it as an ipod.

the only problem is, i dont have the original sim and it came from a friend. i wont be able to get the original sim. so is there any jailbreak techniques that i can use to make it work just as an ipod?
It seems the SIM requirements for this situation are different for the 2G. From that document...
If you no longer have the SIM that was used with the original iPhone, and the original iPhone displays the "Connect To iTunes" screen, contact your carrier to get a replacement SIM.
I don't know if you'll need an account or not... sorry, I don't have experience with a 2G.
