A message popped up saying I have a "5/21/11 4:06:57 AM com.apple.backupd[20358] malformed base path in GetVolumeEntry". The message keeps repeating every minute. WHat does it ma=ean and how do I clear it. There was one other query in the forum that lead to no solution. Any ideas???

This is a guess, but I'd use the Time Machine panel of System Preferences to redeclare the backup disk.
So far I have tried:
permissions
Verify disk ( internal and Time Machine)
Reselect TM
All look good. The console just keeps pumping out the same message. All seems to be working, but the console msg will not go away. There are two references to the error one on Apple and one in German I cannot read. Seems I have a unique issue. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess the only thing to do next is a re-install of OSX. The message only appears on one of the three MACS that use the same TM/router.
Try moving the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist out of the folder /Library/Preferences (not the folder in your home folder). Then use System Preferences to redeclare the Time Machine settings.
If that doesn't help, I have no further suggestions.
I had the same problems. I edited my com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and removed entries from the paths from the "ExcludeByPath" and "IncludeByPath" keys. They contained a lot of paths that no longer exists. After that the error went away. I would think deleting the file and starting over works too.
I'm now getting the error. I'm not clear on where you edited the plist file, though. In Termina, trying to delete a line of code (a reference to a no-longer-existing file path) simply causes a jump in the current region of text I'm viewing.

This solved it for me. I knew what the problem was, but my Time machine control panel didn't have anything in the exclude. but in my plist i had over 196 items, most which didn't exist anymore.!
