Why do I have duplicate Apps in Launchpad

I just installed Lion this morning and really like the interface. It is really nice.

I have duplicate icons for things like Address Book, App Store, Calculator, iCal, etc.

Is there a way to remove the duplicates?

They may be different versions of the same app. Click on each and make sure that you keep the most up-to-date version. You can remove the older versions by clicking and holding on an icon, they will all shake and have a big X in the upper right hand corner, clicking on the X will remove the app, both from Launchpad and your app folder.

I had all my apps arranged into folders before the update and Lion seems to have installed all the Apple apps into the main Applications folder again so to fix this duplication issue I transferred all the non-Apple apps back into the main Applications folder and just deleted the remaining Apple apps from the folders and voila! no duplicates.

Hope this helps with you lot

The correct answer on this is that Apple defaults apps to specific folders and if you put them somewhere else it will install the app fresh in the default location when you upgrade to Lion. I had aliases for some of my key apps that I stored in a folder on the dock and I had also moved some of the lesser used apps to other folders just to keep things tidy.

The solution: remove the older duplicates from your own folders and get rid of the aliases. This cleaned things up really nice and I was able to organize things the way I like in launchpad.

I removed all the apps from the folder that were not duplicates (I simply put them back in the main Applications folder), and then I deleted the folder that contained the duplicate apps. I did not have any problems doing it that way, but I did experience the same problem you mentioned when I tried to delete or move the duplicate app directly. Try deleting the containing folder.

The apps in the folders you created are the ones from your old operating system. You should not experience any issues when you delete them and use the apps that Lion re-installs.

Hope this helps you!

well, I did what you said with DVD Player and the duplicate icon no longer appears. However I still have two DVD Player folders. I had attempted to uses AppTrap but decided not to delete it. I then put the DVD Player foilder in the Library, not knowing where it came from.

Now I will try safari but I have one question about that. The two versions still have .plist files and folders in identical areas though there are not two of those. The com.apple.safare.rss.plist file says it was created on June 17, 2010. Is that the old file?
