iPhone Backup Hang - Fix without Restore?

I have an 16GB iPhone 3GS (model MB715LL) with iOS version 4.3.4. I've been successfully synching/backing up the phone for months with the same set up, most recently with iTunes version 10.4.0.80 running on Windows XP SP3 with all current security patches. Recently, however, iTunes hangs during a synch when trying to do a backup (I've gone so far as to leave it on all night just to verify that it's just not taking a long time for some reason). I've tried obvious things like closing everything on the phone, restarting, and doing a reboot on the computer but the backup continues to hang.

The sequence I see is this:

  1. Plug in the phone (genuine Apple iPhone USB connector)
  2. Dialog box reminding me that iOS version 4.3.5 is available (I had previously downloaded it). I choose "Later" although choosing "Update" makes no difference in the hanging.
  3. I click my device and choose "Sync"
  4. The status at the top goes through the normal pre-stuff (Starting, Backing up, Preparing to sync, etc...)
  5. The status gets to 'Syncing "Paul's iPhone" (Step 1 of 3)' <new line> "Backing up" and the "bar" gets about 1/2" wide and never moves beyond there....

I've looked online and the "fix" to this problem with iTunes seems to be to restore the iPhone to the factory settings and then restore from the last backup. That may work, however, I would prefer a solution that actually fixes the problem. It is annoying that I (and many other iPhone users experiencing the same issue over & over again) should have to lose a bunch of data (calendar entries, text messages, etc...) since my last backup because no one seems to know how (or care) to fix this reccuring problem.

Is there a way to fix or troubleshoot this issue without "punting" and restoring the iPhone and losing data since the last backup?

I'm having the same problem, just trying to update an iPhone from 4.3.3 to iOS 5. I'm so frustrated; none of the solutions here have worked. I've just uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled, to no avail.

I'm really frustrated that iTunes on the PC is such a piece of garbage. I have been trying to back up my phone for the last 24 hours... it's a very frustrating issue.

I've tried what the posts suggest to do in various orders... the NetSH command, I've tried removing backups, I've tried resetting synch history (following the order of each of the posts, of course). I've also tried one of the solutions that involve uninstalling and reinstalling Apple Support apps... all to no avail.

Now I'm vulnerable, because I've deleted the outstanding backups out there for this device.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to upgrade the phone from iOS 4.3.3 to 5, it hangs during the backup. If I manually Sync the device, it does its own backup just fine - but it's during the iOS upgrade where it fails/hangs on the backup.

1. Reset synch history

2. Delete all backups (from the same pref page where you delete sync history and also directly in the file system, c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup)

3. Start a command prompt (run as administrator) and issue 'netsh winsock reset'

4. Reboot

*STEP THREE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP AND ACTUALLY HAS THE OVERALL REAPAIRING AFFECT!*

Solved my issue after coutless hours on the phone to Apple Support and searching the Internet for an answer! Thanks the original poster!

Thank you so much. It worked !

Seven days of work of installing, uninstalling, jail breaking, attempting to roll back, unjail breaking - all in vain.

I'm shocked Apple hasn't addressed this as I haven't been able to purchase anything from iTunes since my iPod crapped out in August. Apple, are you listening ?!? How about a kb on this ?

I want to give a big thumbs up to the person that created this fix. I struggled for days trying to backup and update my iPhone 4 and my 3GS. I was able to do it in abount 1 hour after I followed the detailed instructions in the previous post. Im not a computer programmer by any means but was able to follow the detailed list. Once again a "BIG THANK YOU" to the people that support this forum. You have saved a marriage.

I can't believe Apple still has not managed to fix this bug. I just upgraded from 10.4.1 to 10.5.2 (10.5 being a requirement for iOS 5) and backups started hanging again, requiring killing the iTunes process and rebooting my iPhone. I will just have to go through the steps again. First the netsock reset. Then if that doesn't work reliably, downgrade AppleApplicationSupport to 1.5.2 from (now) 2.1.6 (see full instructions top of page)
