Just back up your phone (if you can... I couldn't). At the least, connect to iPhoto and get your photos off it (if you can).

Once you do that, connect to iTunes and hit the Restore button. iTunes will download the latest iOS update, reset youe phone and install it. Things should be back to normal after that, but you will need to reinstall everything. You should be able to just pull all your apps back down from Apple's cloud (you won't need to rebuy them) and then set your phone up from scratch again.

Pain in the butt, but that's what I had to do.

Good luck

Yep, all working fine again. I just did a restore, as described above. The restore will reset the phone back to factory settings so unless you've done something weird to your phone to stop a restore from working, it should fix the problem.

If you've installed a dev build of iOS on your phone without paying the feee to be a developer, and you've somehow worked around the system that the rest of us work within, then you might be out of luck. I have no idea what happens in that case.

I don't know anything about UDIDs (beyond what they are), but I did not get any questions about that when I restored the phone.

Apart from losing a few pieces of data (which will hopefully still be on the backup on my home computer) everything is working fine.

A small guide on how to put your iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode. Works with all G’s of iPod touch / iPhone

What is DFU: Device Firmware Upgrade

Step 1: Turn off your iPod touch / iPhone completely and connect to PC / mac

Step 2: Hold down the Power button for 3 seconds

Step 3: Without releasing the power button, also hold the Home button for 10 seconds

Step 4: Without releasing the home button, release the power button and keep holding the Home button for 20 seconds.

Itunes will identify that you are in DFU mode.
