iPhone 4 with iOS 5 Proximity Sensor Problem
My proximity sensor does not work on my iPhone 4 during calls. This started almost right after I updated to ios 5. How do I fix it? Thanks.

My husband is having the exact same problem since upgrading his iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Mine has been fine. I'm beginning to wonder if the sensor has always been hyper-sensitive and this iOS version is less tolerant. Anxiously awaiting a solution before he tosses it out the window.

I hope Apple will be able to quickly solve this problem
Well, it turns out the problem was his Otterbox case. There's a ton of info on it here. I just never did a search that way because I didn't make the connection since I have the same case with no problems. His is fixed now. If you guys have an Otterbox case, check out this thread:

I'm starting to see other replies on other threads about this exact same problem. When I went to the Apple Store, they did not even try to diagnose the issue and said it was a hardware issue. My phone is no longer under warranty, so they tried to tell me buying a new phone was the only option. WHAT A JOKE. It's unbelievable that Apple won't even look at your problem unless you give them 30 bucks to just look at it. They could at least tried to test the phone. I believe the software caused this issue. Hopefully they will address the issue like they did with the battery life on the iphone 4S. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.
I'm having the same issue...phone will mute, end calls and dial numbers whilel I'm using the phone ...I just purchased the phone in oct
BUMP
Having the same issue since upgrading to iOS 5. Had the same problem a year ago when I bought the phone and then it got fixed with one of the iOS 4 updates. Now it is back. Basically makes the phone unusable for purposes of calls. Other than that, iOS 5 is awesome. hahaha
do you guys have a protector foil on your iphone?
then just remove it from your phone and try again.
it worked for me
what'a protector foil? thanks
I'm having the same problem also. Seems like it started when I upgraded to 5.0.1.
Tried wverything to no avail. Waiting for a fix. I have this fone leaa than 6 months, it's a shame. And no, i dont use a protect foil or case and my screen is intact......
I had the same issue that started after the upgrade to ios5. It seems this version of the ios has made the proximity sensor less sensitive. If you have a screen protector cutting the protector away from in front of the sensor should resolve the problem. It worked for me just like it did for binemaus411.
To clarify, Sensor worked fine WITH the screen protector over it before the update.
If you want to check it out, make a call with your phone and with it in your hand. The screen should be lit up showing the keypad or whatever. Now move your finger towards the proximity sensor ( located just above the phone's ear speaker next to the camera). If the sensor is working properly it should shut off the display when your finger is about 3/4 of an inch away from it. and it should do so every time you get close to it while on a call. If it is not working, and you have a screen protector, try cutting out the cover where it passes over the sensor, then try the finger test while on a call again.
I am betting it works. If not then it very likely IS a hardware issue. I have heard that you can try syncing the iPhone to Itunes as a new device and it will reset the sensor sensitivity, but I did not have to try it myself.
I am going to publish a more detailed description of what I did, as well as details on how to reset the iPhone on my blog here: http://jasonhamel.com

I have the same issue and it's even worse on ios 5.0.1. The proximity sensor works 1 time on 10 and the home button that works good sometime and just don't work other times.
I suggest reading the thread you posted to for solutions others have found. And also the "More like this" links to the right.
I have same problem. Never had proximity sensor issue in past. I have an iphone4 and purchased it when it first came out almost 2 years ago. Did the ios 5 upgrade and immediately had the problem. Everytime I'm on the phone, it get ssuper hot casue light doesnt turn off. I also mute the call, try to put it on facetime, call other people. It's driving me NUTS!!!! Took to Apple, they wanted me to replace the phone. I reset, restored, restored as new iphone, Still a problem. I updated to 5.1.1 and it fixed it for a short time (like a few days), then immediately it started again. I read a post that says if you put pressure in upper left hand corner of phone (like pinhc it) the sensor will work and beleive it or not it did. But it only works while applying pressure so not very useful when on a call.
HELP!! Apple, please acknowledge its a software problem and fix it!
My hisband has same phone, did same upgrade and his is fine. But mine started immediately after upgrade, 5.1.1 fixed it for a few days and now back to annoying me!
