"You've reached your device limit"

I am managing 25 ipads for teachers to check out from the same account and I have backed the image up to the cloud. I can no longer restore from the cloud because I receive an error message that says "You've reached the maximum number of devices in the last 90 days." Help!

iPad 2, iOS 5

Making kappys point a little differently, while you can support a large number of i pads from a single computer, you can only have 5 computers tied to a single i tunes account. Are you doing all your work from a single machine, or are you bouncing around using multiple computers?

Anyway, my son runs a similar set up at his school, and i asked him the question. Here is his reply.

Hi everyone

Right now i have 30 ipads hooked up to one computer. But it is sort of tricked. Since we started with one group of 15 (all the apps loaded fine and had no warning of too many devices), the next group we set up I used the first groups original back up as a image to reformat the new group of 15. At the moment I image all the machines one at a time. since itunes can only sync one machine at a time it's not too big of a deal. The first back up that is done becomes the main image for each ipad. Once we need to format we restore from that first backup.

(now this does not in any way address any licensing issues, it's more of a work around)

They all use our single account and when I plug them in it auto syncs any new apps. we did have a usb hub set up before but only had a max load of around 10 ipads and they all showed up in itunes. I have not come across the limit warning.

I hope this helps.

I wonder if it's related to this? Are you using Automatic Downloads?

When you turn on Automatic Downloads or download past purchases on an iOS device or computer, your device or computer will be associated with your Apple ID. Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days.

Licensing issues are an important concern. In most cases your license for an app is limited to five different users/devices, hence the need to contact Apple regarding enterprise licensing issues and providing the means not to have to "work around" the extant limitations.

This becomes an even bigger concern if you are part of a government school system where you are open not only to piracy charges but also RICO violations. This not only affects you but all of the school's administrators.

I too have this problem.

My iPhone was replaced as there was a problem with it. When I attempted to restore from iCloud onto the new phone, I got the message "You've Reached Your Device Limit". I only had 6 devices enabled. All of my contacts, messages, account settings etc. would restore but any third party apps would not, they would be on my home screen, but greyed out and 'Waiting'. Attempting to tap on the app to get the download going would result in the same error message about device limits popping up.

I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Apple about this and a solution wasn't found. Lots of different things were tried, turning iTunes Match off, signing in and out of iCloud and iTunes storeaccounts then restoring the phone. Every time the same thing happened. If I deleted an app, then tried to install it fresh, it too would just say 'Waiting'.

I was able to download an app on my Mac and transfer it across however.

There was a work around though. The Apple person I spoke with contacted the iTunes store team who deleted any apps that were in my download queue. I then deleted all troublesome apps from my iPhone, went back into the app store app, updates, purchases, not on this phone and then reinstalled apps I wanted back.

Not ideal, but at least I have all my apps back. Apple themselves don't know why this is happening and they do have engineeers looking into it. I just hope now nothing happens to my phone and I don't need to restore from iCloud in the next 90 days.

Anyone with this problem I would recommend backing up to iTunes and then if you do have to restore your phone do this through iTunes as the problem is only with iCloud restores I believe.

  • I bought 4 new i phones.... one of the phones gives the message you have reached your device limit.
  • I spent 6 hours on the phone over the weekend on 5 different calls and went to the apple store. I will not bore you with the details and all the different things we tired including a new I cloud account. After 3 days of this apple support got back to me and said there is no fix. It is a program error and they will work on it. I mean how bad is it when they can't just re set the stupid message and start over. Soooooooo I am sending back all the i Phones after using them form the very first one. Steve would roll over in his grave!!!! I can not believe that apple could let this happen. Maybe that is one of the reasons the stock is so down. I have ordered all Galaxy 3s and have my fingers crossed that I like them. I phones were great but it just seems crazy that they would let me spend so much time trying to fix this phone and than find out here it has happened before and they are aware of the problem. bye bye i phones
