Restart the iPad (hold Home and Sleep together until the Apple logo appears - about 10 seconds).

If that fails, do a Restore via iTunes. One of those should fix it

Thanks, iPad3. Your info is interesting. Hopefully, mine won't get so bad that I have to do everything you've written. 😉 I'm just wondering why you have to turn multiple gestures 'on' when, if you click the Home button 2 times quickly, it does the same thing. It would seem that turning multiple gestures on would just add one more thing running in the background, non?

Don't know wether it is an issue for the older iPad 2 models, I've had mine for a couple of months and not had a crash (yet) in safari, star walk does occasionally crash but no other probs....

Must admit to being a tad anal about closing all background apps down when ever I close an app.....

Good luck with it and happy holidays folks

My native iPad apps crash every day on my original iPad. I started regularly clearing the multitasked apps a few months ago at the suggestion of an Apple genius. It helps, but not enough. This problem started when I upgraded to iOS 5. The OS has a problem with crashes, and Apple needs to correct it. My wife and I now refuse to perform any critical tasks on our iPads, like important email, for fear of crashes. This is a big issue, and workarounds on discussion boards are inadequate. This is a widespread issue with ios5, I'll bet.

I've tried all the above suggestions and my iPad 1 has just turned into a brick since the last update. Nothing stays open and I've "restored" it a couple of times with no positive effect. My Mac loyalty is wainning. I think they're getting in over their head and can't keep the product current and working.

I hate to say this but I think it may be time to look for another solution other than Mac.

OK! After newmorus resets, lots of frustration and threating to use my iPad as a frisbee I took a deep breath and pulled myself together for one last attempt to try and figure this problem out. And I did! I have to say I've fallen back in love with my iPad. Interesting that this all came to a head on Valantines Day! Anyway....

I started to back track my activity that led up to the crashing problems on my iPad and decided to start eliminating apps to see if one of them was effecting my little friend. I started with the last app I installed, Pinterest. I found the app, held it down until it wiggled and hit the little x button at the top. I then reset my iPad holding the home button and the power button at the same time and allowed it to turn off. After restarting it everything is back to normal!

I remember from older days that this kind of problem would sometimes happen on my mac. The operating system would have a conflict with an app or an update and cause lots of problems.

So, I'd try to eliminate apps, one at a time to see if that helps you with your particular crashing issue. Good luck!

PROBLEM SOLVED

I installed iOS 5 on my iPad 1 when it came out in October 2011. Everything worked fine. Sometimes around the beginning of January, apps began to crash. First it was a few a week, but by the eginning of February, most of them would crash after running for a few minutes. Many would not restart untill I did a full reboot. My iPad became essentially useless.

After fighting this problem for almost two weeks, reading as many forums as possible, I did many things that DID NOT solve the problem. Here they are in the order I tried them.

  1. Removed all working programs and rebooting the iPad - no effect
  2. Removed over 50 apps (from 200) that I was not really using - no effect
  3. Restored network setting via setttings - no effect
  4. Restored all settings via settings. This re-installed everything via iCloud - no effect
  5. Connected my iPad to my computer and did a restore and used a previous backup - no effect

Then, I remembered that other people were having problem with iCloud and that I had added services to iCloud around the beginning of the year. So I

Went into settings >> iCloud and disabled every iCloud service except the Find my iPad service. I rebooted my iPad and I have been crash free for three days.

So the problem IS iCloud.

Apple knows that there are other problems with iCloud and plans to fix it in the next release 5.0.2. In the meantime, try my solution and report to this forum if it works for you too.
